9th February 2016 Match Reports

Going into this weeks matches in Division One of the Eastern Valley League YMCA Preachers held a 11 point lead over their nearest rivals Bristol Nomads having played a game more. Therefore, this weeks clash between the two sides was always going to be crucial in deciding the outcome of the title and so it proved as the Preachers went down 23-9 to a very strong Nomads team. Player of the match was the Nomads Chris Price who won all of his matches without dropping a set. He was closely followed by Mike Bishop who also won all his matches. For the Preachers Claire Flannagan won 1 match and narrowly lost to Mike Bishop 10-12 in the 5th set. This leaves the Nomads in a strong position with a 3 point lead, but, they have 2 matches to play whereas their rivals have only 1 match to play.

The only other side with an outside chance of catching the leaders are Cwmbran Blues who won their latest match 23-9 against Cwmbran Colts. The Blues provided the player of the match in Mark Farrow with 3 wins and he was supported by David D Lloyd and Eric Turner with 2 wins each. For the Colts John Spencer had a very good win over the higher ranked David D Lloyd.

The final match of the evening saw Cwmbran Aztecs take on Blaenavon Aces who were boosted by the appearance of Dean Cundy 5th ranked player in Wales. It was Cundy who took the player of the match award with 3 wins to guide the Aces to a close 16-15 win. Cundy was well supported by Jonathan Allen with 2 wins. For the Aztecs Tony Collins secured 2 wins for his team.

In Division Two Cwmbran Panthers retained their title with one match to spare by comfortably beating Cwmbran Fellows 26-5. Once again Mike Blatchford was player of the match with 3 wins closely followed by Howard Gaut also with 3 wins. Both Blatchford and Gaut secured very good wins over Wayne Ford who doubled his seasons losses in one night. Congratulations to the Panthers team of Blatchford, Gaut and Yuri Cherkasenko on winning the Division Two title.

Cwmbran Dynamos secured the runner up position despite losing 17-19 to Cwmbran Devils, who virtually clinched third place in the division. Player of the match award went to Alex Jones of the Dynamos with his 3 wins. For the Devils both Stan Williams and Colin Scott won 2 matches each to guide their side to the win.

The final match saw Blaenavon Bulldogs complete a closely fought 22-16 win over Cwmbran Eccentrics. The Bulldogs' Lincoln Alford won all his matches to pick up the player of the match award. There were good wins for the Bulldogs' Callum Hunt over the higher ranked Richard Lownsbrough and Eccentrics' Matthew Powell over the higher ranked Hunt.
