Eastern Valley League Tournament 2016 - Update 2

The latest Tournaments held this week were the Veterans and Junior events.

The Veterans tournament had 18 entries split into 6 groups of 3 with the top 2 in each group progressing to the knockout stages. There were no shocks in the group stages with all seeds progressing comfortably. The top 4 seeds of Lee Thomas, Chris Price, Mark Farrow and Roger Grech all won their groups and had byes direct to the quarter finals. The rest of the group winners and runners-up had to battle it out in Round 1 for the right to meet the top seeds in the quarter finals. The quarter-finals saw Thomas beat Mark Edmunds, Grech beat David Lloyd and Price beat Jon Allen. Unfortunately, in the other quarter final Tony Collins had to withdraw with injury early in his match against Farrow. In the Semi-finals top 2 seed Lee Thomas and Chris Price had reasonably comfortable wins over LLoyd and Farrow respectively. The final was a much more competitive affair with many of the vets and junior players staying on to watch an absorbing final. The first set went to Price 11-7, but Thomas (ranked No. 1 Vet. in Wales) fought back to win the second and third sets in 5 & 8. At this stage the crowd were expecting Thomas to finish off his opponent, however, Price is a fighter and won the fourth set 11-9. This set up an exciting final set which was in doubt until the very end which Thomas won 11-9.

The Junior competition had 7 juniors split into two group of 3 and 4 with the top 2 in each group progressing to the Semi finals. In Group 'A' the top seed Louis Price had comfortable wins over Callum Hunt and Coel Alford. The surprise in this group was the win of Alford over the higher ranked Hunt to qualify for the semi finals. In Group 'B' the top 2 seeds Ben Allen and Bethany Brewer had wins over Matthew Cullingford and Lewis Parker to set up a group decider which Brewer won 3 sets to 1. This was an important win for Brewer as she avoided the top seed, Price, in the semi final. This meant that Ben Allen had to face Louis Price and to his credit made Price fight all the way before losing 3-1. In the other semi final Brewer had a fairly comfortable win over Coel Alford in straight sets. The final will be played on 12th April along with the latter stages of the other tournaments.
