Eastern Valley Closed Tournament 2017 - Doubles and Handicap Singles

The latest tournaments in the Eastern Valley Closed played this week were the Doubles and Handicap Singles. There were 14 pairs entered in the doubles and 28 entries in the Handicap Singles.

Results in the first round of Doubles were as anticipated with the only upset being the defeat of the division one pair Bethany Brewer and Callum Hunt by their second division opponents Alex Jones and Stan Williams. Again, results in the quarter finals went with seedings with the exception of the father and son combination of Jon and Ben Allen with their win over Roger Grech and Peter Gordon. The successful pairs who reached the Semi-Final were Mark Farrow & David D Lloyd; Mark Edmunds & Nigel Gore; Jon Allen & Ben Allen; Tony Collins & Andrew Ryder. These matches will be played on Finals night on 28th March.

It is always difficult to award an appropriate handicap that provides a competitive and close match. However, this years Handicap Singles saw many matches decided in the 5th set which was good to see. The handicap secretary is always looking to give the division two player the best chance when playing someone from division one. However, although there were many very close matches it was the division one players who reached the quarter finals. The players who progressed to the semi-final were Peter Gordon beating Bethany Brewer(+2); Andrew Ryder(+2) beating David D Lloyd; Mark Farrow beating Ben Allen(+2); Mark Edmunds(+2) beating Tony Collins. The semi-final and final matches will be played on 28th March.
