Eastern Valley Closed Tournament 2017 - Division One

The Groups, Quarter-finals and Semi-Finals of the Division Two tournament was played this week. There were 18 entries split into 6 groups with the top two in each group progressing into the knockout stages. The qualifiers from the groups were as anticipated with the possible exception of Bethany Brewer who beat the higher ranked Nigel Gore in her group to progress.

Round One saw wins for Roger Grech over Mathew Pearce, Mark Farrow over Peter Gordon, Mark Edmunds over Bethany Brewer and a first win of the season over Ray Goulding in straight sets.

The Quarter-finals saw the top 2 seeds of Tony Collins and David D Lloyd(Eng) advance to the semi-finals with wins over Roger Grech and Mark Edmunds respectively. In the other quarter-finals 6th seed Mark Farrow beat the 4th seed David Lloyd(Wal) and the unseeded Andrew Ryder continued his excellent tournament with an exciting 5 set win over 3rd seed Alex Banks.

The Semi-finals saw Andrew Ryder's run come to an end when he lost to David D Lloyd 4-11, 5-11, 6-11. The other semi-final produced the best table tennis of the night with Mark Farrow coming back from 2 sets to 1 down to overcome the many times winner of this tournament, Tony Collins, 12-10, 6-11, 6-11, 11-4, 11-8.

Therefore, it will be David D Lloyd v Mark Farrow to decide the Division One winner and will be played on Finals Night, 28th March.
