2nd January 2018 Match Reports

 This weeks matches in Division One of the Eastern Valley Table Tennis League saw Cwmbran Colts extend their lead at the top following their 24 - 14 win over Cwmbran Blues in a highly competitive match. Only 2 matches were won in straight sets and even one of those saw Lyndon Jones (Colts) beat David Lloyd (Blues) 12-10,19-17,12-10. Jones went on to win all his matches and just edged out Mathew Pearce, who also had 3 wins, for the player of the match award. For the Blues Mark Farrow and Roger Grech picked up 6 and 5 points respectively.

In an even closer match 2nd placed Cwmbran Aztecs defeated YMCA Preachers 20-17. Player of the match was the Preachers' Neil Wright, despite losing an exciting 5 set match to the Aztecs' Tony Collins. Wright was well supported by David Lloyd with 2 wins including another exciting 5 set win over Collins. For the Aztecs Collins had 2 wins in his 8 points and Ian Maggs also had 2 good wins over higher ranked opponents, Lloyd and Ray Goulding.

In the other match in Division One Blaenavon Aces moved off the bottom with a 22-10 win over Bristol Nomads, who replace them at the bottom. However, the Nomads were a player short for the match. Player of the match was the Aces' Jon Allen with his maximum wins.  For the Nomads Andy Banks battled well for his 2 wins.

In Division Two, Cwmbran Panthers also extended their lead at the top with a 22-11 win over Cwmbran Eccentrics. Player of the match was the Panthers Yuri Cherkasenko with his 3 wins including a very good win over the higher ranked John Thomas in 5 close sets. Cherkasenko was well supported by Colin Price and Howard Gaut with 2 wins each. For the Eccentrics Thomas had 2 wins in his 8 point

Second placed Cwmbran Dynamos despite beating Cwmbran Devils 18-15, lost ground slightly on the leaders, however, they do have a game in hand. This match saw the Dynamos' Alex Jones gain revenge for his early season defeat with a 5 set win over Roshan Rai. Jones was well supported by Richard Lownsbrough with his 2 wins. For the Devils' Rai had 2 wins and Stan Williams picked up 5 points.

North Gwent Cougars moved into third place following their 22-7 win over Chepstow Chiefs. The Cougars also provided the player of the match in Greg Price with his maximum wins. Price was well supported by Sam Slatter and Garin Edwards with their 2 wins. For the Chiefs Connor Pyke fought well for his 2 wins.
