13th February 2018 Match Reports

Unfortunately due to postponements there was only one match played this week in DivisionOne of the Eastern Valley Table Tennis League. Second placed Cwmbran Aztecs were looking to make up some ground on the leaders Cwmbran Colts. However, once again they were without their talisman Tony Collins and went down 9-23 to YMCA Preachers. Player of the match was Ray Goulding with 3 wins, just edging out teammate ClaireFlannagan, who also had 3 wins. For the Aztecs, Mark Edmunds and Andrew Ryder had 1 win each, both defeating David Lloyd for the first time this season.

The leaders of Division Two, Cwmbran Dynamos, suffered their first defeat of the season when they lost 16-18 to North Gwent Cougars. Player of the match once again was the Cougars Greg Price with 3 wins and was well supported by Jon Deacon with 1 win and 5 points and Sam Slatter who picked up a good win over thehigher ranked Richard Lownsbrough. For the Dynamos, Alex Jones had 2 wins and Lownsbrough and Smith-Haddon had 1 win each.

With the leaders losing, second placed Cwmbran Panthers took advantage with a 26-5 win over Cwmbran Fellows to close the gap to 7 points. The Panthers put out a strong team with last seasons top player, Mike Blatchford proving a more than able deputy for the unavailable Yuri Cherkasenko. However it was Colin Price who took the player of the match award with 3 wins, just edging Blatchford who also had maximum wins. They were well supported by Howard Gaut with his 2 wins and 8 points. The Fellows were missing their number one Wayne Ford and were always going to find it tough. However there was a very good win for Haydn Skinner over the higher ranked Gaut.

The final match in the division saw Cwmbran Eccentrics overcome Cwmbran Devils 15-12. Player of the match was the Eccentrics' John Thomas with 3 wins including a good win over Roshan Rai in 3 very close games. Thomas was well supported by Connor Pyke, substituting for the unavailable Lincoln Alford. For the Devils there were 2 wins for Rai and 1 win each for Glenda Prytherch and Marta Morris.
