16th January 2018 Match Reports

In the latest round of matches in the Eastern Valley Table Tennis League, Cwmbran Colts continued their march towards the Division One title with a 25-10 win over Blaenavon Aces. For a change it was not the Colts' Lee Thomas winning the player of the match award, but his team mate Lyndon Jones, although both registered 3 wins. They were well supported by Ben Pearce with his 2 wins. For the Aces Ben Allen registered his sides only victory, but, mention should be made of Jon Allen who registered 5 of his teams points including a 5 set defeat to Thomas.

Cwmbran Aztecs are the nearest challengers to the Colts and saw off their closest rivals Cwmbran Blues 21-10. Both sides were missing key players and it was the Aztecs Tony Collins who collected the player of the match award, edging out colleague Mark Edmund, with both players gaining 3 wins. For the Blues there were wins each for Roger Grech, Ian Maggs and Jack Fletcher.

The final match in Division One saw YMCA Preachers gain a 26-9 win over Bristol Nomads. In Division Two there was a top of the table clash between the leaders Cwmbran Panthers and 2nd placed Cwmbran Dynamos. Unfortunately the Panthers were missing a key player and they went down 22-14, in a very competitive match, which leaves the Dynamos in a strong position with their 2 games in hand over the leaders. Player of the match was the Dynamos' Alex Jones with his 3 wins including a win over Colin Price, thus revenging an early season loss. Jones was well supported by Richard Lownsbrough with 2 wins, which also included a good win over Price in 5 sets. For the Panthers Howard Gaut picked up 2 wins including a good win over the higher ranked Lownsbrough.

Moving into third place in the Division were Cwmbran Devils, despite losing 18-15 to Chepstow Chiefs.
