In Division 1, there were some good and very close games when Fulbourn 2 entertained Ellesmere 1 and emerged the winners by 7-3. Nigel Bates scored three and Phil Hague and Peter Xie two each. For Ellesmere, Rhys Davies featured in all three wins, two in the singles and then the doubles with Joanne Pettitt over Xie and Bates. Apart from the doubles, all the five-set games went to the hosts. Despite Helen Arnold pulling back to two-all against Mark Lillyman, Mark took the final leg of the evening to score Soham Comrades only point against a strong Soham side, for whom Ivaylo Kostadinov and Martin Freeland scored maximums.
Division 2 action saw Brian Mitchell scoring three, Steve Foulger one and then the doubles together to force a draw with visitors Ellesmere 2, having been three-one ahead at one stage. For Ellesmere, Aldo Galea scored two (Rachel and Steven Foulger), David Wiseman two – also against the Foulgers – and Annette Ginn one, over Rachel. Rob Powell, playing up for Fulbourn 3 equipped himself well but lost his three singles to Michael Klein, Mike Johnston and Anne Chambers of Impington 2. Unfortunately for the Imps, all other games were lost as Tony Comiskey – with his brick wall top-spin defence – and Danny Bates with his quick, low and wide forehand loops cleared the rest of the board.
In Division 3, Simon Johnson scored a maximum and his efforts plus two wins from Thomas Pizey over Melissa Rule and Nicky Rule secured the draw when Ellesmere 3 visited Comrades 3. Comrades five points came by way of two from Chris Rule and one each from Melissa and Nicky. Comrades also took the doubles when Chris and Nicky beat Pizey and Nathan Johnson in four legs. Comrades 4 suffered badly through only taking two players to Burwell where they went down by 8-2, Pete Claringbold and Edward Garrett-Jones beating Michel Scarff. For Burwell, Antony Taylor Gutierrez and Ivan Stiff scored maximums and Stiff and Scarff won the doubles.
