Evesham & District Table Tennis Association Specsavers Division 1 Report
16th October 2016
Two of the top teams in Evesham & District Specsavers Division 1 faced each other this week, as JLM Hawks travelled to Wyre Elite. Hawks started well with Dave Harvey and Luke Moffat winning their opening matches, but Jack Davis was struggling with illness. Davis lost to Elite’s Matt Hartwell and was then forced to retire, forfeiting his remaining 2 matches. Moffat beat Graham Fisher and Darrell Wiltshire, but lost a fiveset battle with Hartwell. Harvey beat Hartwell in straight sets and went undefeated yet again, as he did on all occasions but one last season. Elite had the chance to salvage a draw in the doubles, but Harvey and Moffat beat Hartwell and Wiltshire 3-1 and Hawks finished 6-4 winners.
JLM Dragonflies also had a narrow victory, beating Kington Bulldogs 6-4. JLM’s Mark Hale was Player of the Match with 3 wins, although he had to dig deep to beat Malcolm MacFarlane who twice fought back to level the match, before Hale took the final set.
The match between Littleton Aces and Littleton Clubs finished 5-5. Craig Witheford won all 3 of his matches for Clubs and remains undefeated. Younger brother Alistair picked up his first Division 1 win, beating Duncan Arrandale 3-1. Mark Dudley and Andrew Taylor replied for Aces with 2 wins each, but the Witheford brothers combined to win the doubles and salvage the draw for Clubs.
Kington Blades were a player short in their match against JLM Owls but still managed to win 7-3 as both John Price and Alan Cotton beat all their opponents and also won the doubles.
Littleton Positives had a comfortable 10-0 win against Bengeworth Purple.
