Rory wins the Derek Bishop Preseason Tournament Sun 18 Sept 2016

In an excellent day's table-tennis in a packed hall, Rory Harries came out top of a very competitive field.

"The tournament was great, wasn't it!?! The Exeter league people all seem super friendly." Thanks Julie! - and thanks to John Shearman and John Maguire for their excellent organization.

Derek Bishop Memorial Pre-Season Report
The pre-season tournament was held at Okehampton Table Tennis Centre on Sunday 18th September 2016.
A total of 43 players took part and were split into 7 groups for the initial stage.
There were a number of notable matches in the group stages:-
In Group A Andy Phillips managed to beat Naomi Jackson in a close five games winning the last 11-9. Mark Freeman also had a five game battle with John Squire which he managed to win 11-8 in the last.
In Group B Mark Burridge was taken all the way by Clive Banham winning 11-9 in the fifth.
In Group C only one match went more than three games with Mark Smith beating Herbie Sage in four.
Group D was similar with only 2 matches lasting more than three games. Steve Deryshire taking one game from Steve Butcher and Daniel Jones taking one from Jon Cheung.
In Group E the star match was Vince Court versus Curtis Sage. Curtis took the first two games only for Vince to win the last three to take the match 12-10 in the last game.
Group F had three matches that went to five games. George Haskell was taken to the last Game by Ed Damanskas, probably the performance of the round. Ed then beat John Phillips in five games and there was a close match between Howard Back and Julie Byrne which Julie won 11-5 in the fifth after being two games down.
In Group G Daniel Webster-Hall was involved in a couple of battles - he narrowly lost to Kevin Nicholls 11-9 in the fifth and then beat Ed Crawford 11-8 in the fifth. Junior newcomer Jake Upsher also picked up a couple of good wins.
The drawn doubles followed the group stages.
The first semi-final featured Naomi Jackson & Steve Butcher against Dennis Gibbs & Ed Damanskas. Dennis & Ed took the first game 11-9 but then Naomi & Steve took the next three 11-8, 11-6, 11-6 to get to the final. The second semi-final was a very close match with Mike Hugh & Howard Back just beating George Haskell & Bob Landberger 13-11, 15-13, 8-11, 11-5, 11-8. Mike & Howard then went on to win the Final, beating Naomi & Steve 11-8, 11-7, 3-11, 11-6.
After the doubles the knock out stages of the tournaments began.
The Consolation event for players finishing in the bottom two in the group stage. The final saw Denys Filenko who had beaten Mike Maguire, Bob Landberger and his team mate Ed Damanskas on route to the final against Joe Camp who had beaten John Phillips, Robert Wilshire and Mike Ware to get there. Joe proved to be too strong for Denys and won 11-6, 12-10 and 11-7.
In the Intermediate Tournament for those finishing in the middle two positions in the group stage. Herbie Sage faced Andy Phillips. Herbie had a slightly easier route to the final having a bye in the first round but then had a couple of tricky matches firstly facing his brother Curtis and then Tom Ricketts in the semi-final both of who he beat in 4 sets. Andy had a win in 4 against Howard Back in the first round before having a battle against Mark Smith, winning 11-9 in the fifth game. In his semi-final he beat his team mate Dan Jones in four games. In the final Herbie proved too consistent and won 11-9, 11-2, 11-8. In 2015 Herbie and his brother Curtis entered the pre-season tournament and won only one match between them all day. This year Curtis was only stopped by his brother in the intermediate and Herbie went on to win it. They have shown great improvement in the last year and I don’t think it will be too long before they are challenging for the main event.
In this year’s main event the seeded players all got through to the Quarter-Finals to make for some entertaining matches. Rory Harries beat Jon Cheung 17-15, 11-9, 10-12, 11-4. Mark Burridge beat George Haskell 11-7, 11-2, 9-11, 11-4. Kevin Nicholls beat Naomi Jackson 11-6, 7-11, 11-5, 11-8. Mike Hugh beat Dennis Gibbs 11-9, 9-11, 11-4, 11-7. The semi-finals were quite different, Rory Harries had a fairly easy victory against Mark Burridge 11-4, 11-6 11-7. The same couldn’t be said about the other semi. Kevin Nicholls won the first and third game 12-10 and 11-4, Mike Hugh won the second and fourth games 11-9 and 11-6. It seemed that one end of the table gave that player the advantage. This changed in the last game as Mike took an early lead and kept it to win the match 11-8.
The final saw Rory Harries the 2015 champion take on Mike Hugh. Mike took the first game 11-7 but Rory then took control to win the next three games 11-4, 11-6 11-8 to retain his title.
Overall it was a long but enjoyable day with some great table tennis to be seen including some excellent junior performances. I hope you all have a good season and look forward to seeing you back again next year.
