Senior League Week 18

Division 1

This week's action from the Doric Insurance sponsored leagues was fruitful for the leading Lions sides in the top flight, with victories coming for both leaders Lions C and 2nd placed side Lions A.

The C side remain just a single point ahead prior to next week's top of the table clash and this was due to their commanding 7-3 victory over Lions B. Phil Ogier and Paul Hainsworth were on hand to earn all 7 wins as each ran out victorious in singles encounters over Liam Robilliard, Ryan Bichard and Luke Bichard. Ogier dropped just the single end to Ryan, whereas Hainsworth won all of his matches over 4 ends. The duo combined strongly in the doubles fixture where they overcame Robilliard and Ryan in straight games. Andre De Carteret came very close to adding to the margin of victory, but narrowly lost to Ryan over 5 ends, having led 2-1. He lost to Luke in straight games and Robilliard in 4.

The A side on the other hand secured a crucial win against 3rd placed side Whistlers A this week, a narrow 6-4 win putting the defeated side 4 points adrift from the leaders. Joshua Butler and Ben Foss earned 5 of the required 6 rubbers due to them each recording singles wins over Mark Pipet and Ryan Gilson and then combining to defeat the pair of Pipet and Garry Dodd over 4 legs in the doubles. Junior Dan Collenette secured the pivotal 6th rubber when he overcame fellow Junior and left-hander Ryan Gilson over 4 ends. Dodd held onto to his 100% singles record for the season with wins over Foss and Collenette in straight and 4 games respectively, but he was tested strongly during his match with Butler. The Lions player was playing some good table tennis and opened up a 2-1 advantage when he took the 3rd 11-2. Dodd took a comfortable 4th end, before Butler opened up a 5-2 advantage at the change of ends in the decider. The recently crowned 7 time CI Open Top 12 winner was determined not to lose his impressive record and he stormed through 11-7. Pipet picked up the other Whistlers win with his 4 set win over Collenette.

4th placed side Whistlers C were held to a 5-5 draw by the side at the bottom of the table, Whistlers B. Joshua Stacey was the best performer of the match and his trio of singles wins for the B side helped them towards the result. His most important win came over twin Lawrence where he edged through 11-8 in the deciding end. His other wins came over Matthew Casey and Albert Unden in straight games. Martin Sarre also showed good form and he was responsible for the other wins for the B side, coming through against Unden in straight games and Casey 11-6 in the decider. For the C side, all of the players defeated Joseph Bourgaize, Lawrence over 4 ends and both Unden and Casey over the full 5 set distance. Lawrence also defeated Sarre in straight games and combined well with Casey during a 5 set win over Josh and Sarre.

Division 2

Lions D appear to be running away with the title after they extended their lead at the top to 5 points.

This week they secured a 7-3 win over Lions F, with each player winning 2 of their 3 singles matches. Jamie Ferbrache, Andy Gill and Ian Le Page all overcame Dave Sherbourne and Steve Potter. The team of Ferbrache and Gill then beat Jez Powell and Potter in the doubles match without loss. None of the D side was able to get the better of Powell in singles action though, both Ferbrache and Gill came close before ultimately losing in 5.

Division 3

Whistlers G are 4 points clear at the top and this week won 8-2 over Lions I. Ellis Tomlin held onto to his unbeaten singles record with wins over Lynn Finn, Lionel Jones and reserve Erin Bisson. Tom Hagerich also won his 3 singles matches and the duo combined to beat Finn and Jones in straight games in the doubles clash. Jayden Tucknott also picked up a solid straight game win over Bisson, but lost out to Finn and Jones.

Division 4

Whistlers K now have a substantial 7 point lead at the top following a crushing 9-1 win over Whistlers J. Shane Cotter and Joe Le Page each beat Jack Le Prevost, Leah Moore and Jayden Tucknott in singles matches. The pair also won the doubles over Moore and Le Prevost in straight games. Reserve Shelby Timms beat Tucknott in 5 and Moore in straight games, but lost to Le Prevost in 5 games, which prevented the whitewash.
