28th OCTOBER MATCH REPORT

With the leaders in Division One, Cwmbran Blues, having a bye it gave an opportunity to the other sides to grab the 'yellow jersey' position. It was Cwmbran Colts who took the opportunity to grab the leaders spot, however, they have played a game more than their rivals. Both matches this week were close and exciting matches with the outcome only being decided in the last matches. Cwmbran Aztecs beat Bristol Nomads 17-16 with the match being decided by the Aztecs' player of the match Tony Collins winning a close 5 setter against the Nomads Keith Armstrong. In the other match in Div. One between Cwmbran Colts and YMCA the score was 13-13 going into the final match between the Colts' John Spencer and Eric Turner of YMCA and it was Spencer who came out on top 3-0 to clinch the match for the Colts. The Colts were indebted to another player of the match performance from Lee Thomas who remains undefeated this season.

As in Div. 1 the leaders of Division Two, Cwmbran Panthers had a bye this week, but their nearest rivals Blaenavon Aces could not take advantage. The Aces were playing Cwmbran Dynamos and lost the match 8-24 thanks to another player of the match performance from the Dynamos' Alex Jones. Unfortunately due to work commitments the Dynamos were without their number 2 player from last year, Alson Limbu, but young Louis Price stepped in at the last minute to win all his matches on his debut in the Eastern Valley League. Cwmbran Devils won their first match of the season 24-12 against Cwmbran Eccentrics thanks to a player of the match performance from Colin Scott. Special mention to Stan Williams of the Devils who had 2 wins against players higher up the rankings and only lost in 5 sets to the Eccentrics no. 1 Lincoln Alford. In the final match in div. 2 Cwmbran Fellows appeared to have a comfortable win 20-12 against Blaenavon Bulldogs. However, the result was only in the last 2 matches that the Fellows managed to pull ahead. Bethany Brewer of the Bulldogs played particularly well to win 2 matches and her only defeat was against the experienced Wayne Ford in a hard fought match.

Next week sees a break from League table tennis with the quarter finals of the Team Handicap Cup.
