Eastern Valley Vets - 1st Weekend Report

Three sides representing the Eastern Valley League recently returned from North Wales after competing in the first weekend of matches in the Veterans Team Championship of Wales. The 'A' and 'B' sides were competing in the Premier Division and the 'C' side were in Division One.

The 'A' side with a strong team of Lee Thomas, Tony Collins and Mark Farrow were hoping for a good start in their bid to win the title. This they did, but, were disappointed to lose to Cardiff A on the first day of competition. However, they bounced back the following day by defeating last years title holders Ynys Mon A to finish the first weekend of matches in second place behind Cardiff A who also beat Ynys Mon. Lee Thomas and Tony Collins both won 9 out of the 10 matches played and will be confident of reversing the result against Cardiff A the next time they face each other.

The 'B' squad of David Lloyd, Ray Goulding, Andrew Ryder and Jonathan Allen knew they were going to find it tough in the Premier Division and their main aim would have been to avoid last place. After the weekend they only managed 1 win against Swansea B, but, it kept them off the bottom. David Lloyd competed well to win 5 out of 10 matches over the weekend.

The 'C' team were making their debuts in this competition and battled well to win 2 of their 5 matches. The team for the first day was Ian Maggs, who did well to win 5 of his 6 matches, Mark Edmunds and John Thomas, with Wayne Ford replacing the unavailable Maggs for the second day.

All the teams will be looking forward to a shorter journey to Cardiff for the last round of matches in early February.
