3rd January 2017 Match Reports

Fixtures in the Eastern Valley Table Tennis League resumed this week after the Christmas break with YMCA Preachers continuing to lead Division One. In their latest match they had a 23-13 win over third placed Cwmbran Colts. Player of the match was the Preachers' David Lloyd with 3 wins and he was well supported by Claire Flannagan and Eric Turner with their 2 wins. For the Colts Nigel Gore battled well for his 2 wins.

Hanging on to second place are Cwmbran Blues despite suffering a 22-13 defeat by Bristol Nomads. Making their league debut were Sammy Ogunade for the Blues and John Jones for the Nomads and it was Jones who picked up the player of the match award with his 3 wins. He was well supported by Alex Banks and Peter Gordon who both had good wins over higher ranked opponents, Banks beating Mark Farrow and Gordon beating Farrow and Roger Grech.

The final match in Division One was the clash between the bottom 2 sides with Cwmbran Aztecs overcoming Blaenavon Aces 24-8. For the Aztecs' Tony Collins and Andrew Ryder both won their 3 matches but it was Collins who picked up the player of the match award. For the Aces Bethany Brewer and Ben Allen had notable wins over the higher ranked Mark Edmunds.

Division Two matches this week saw the eagerly awaited match between the leaders Cwmbran Panthers and the previously unbeaten Cwmbran Dynamos. Unfortunately, the Dynamos went into the match without the Divisions fourth ranked player Richard Lownsbrough. Despite this nobody would have anticipated the emphatic margin of the 26-6 win for the Panthers which gives them a big lead at the top of the division. The Dynamos cause was not helped by the divisions highest ranked player, Alex Jones having a night to forget in losing all his matches for the first time in many a year. For the Panthers Mike Blatchford and Yuri Cherkasenko won all their matches and Howard Gaut won two matches.

In the battle for third place in the division, Cwmbran Fellows narrowly saw off their closest rival Cwmbran Devils by 17-16 thanks to a player of the match performance from Wayne Ford with his 3 straight set wins. For the Devils Colin Scott picked up 2 wins. This match also saw a very good win for the Devils' Glenda Prytherch over the higher ranked Chris Thomas.

The final match saw Cwmbran Eccentrics defeat North Gwent Cougars 23-10. For the Eccentrics both Matthew Powell and Lincoln Alford won their 3 matches but it was Powell who narrowly picked up the player of the match. For the Cougars both Cerys Evans and Iestyn Howells battled hard for their 5 points each.
