The new 2019/20 season of Eastern Valley Table Tennis started this week in Cwmbran Stadium. In Division One the early pacesetters are Cwmbran Blues who beat recently promoted North Gwent Cougars 27-3. Player of the match was the Blues' Colin Price who secured 3 wins without dropping a game. He was well supported by Mark Farrow and David Lloyd also with maximum 3 wins. For the Cougars, Laura Price, making a welcome return to the league after a number of years absence, battled hard in all her matches and only losing out by the odd point in the majority of her matches.
Chasing the early leaders are Cwmbran Preachers who beat Cardiff Nomads 26-8. Player of the match was the Preachers' David Lloyd with 3 wins and he was well supported by guest player Mark Edmunds, also with 3 wins, and Claire Flannagan with 2 wins. For the Nomads, Dave Groundsell, making his first appearance for the league, fought well for his 1 win and 6 team points.
In third place are Blaenavon Aces who beat Cwmbran Tigers 18-15. For the Aces, Jon and Ben Allen registered 2 wins each and Iestyn Howells 1 win. Despite being on the losing side, the Tigers' guest player, Tony Collins picked up the player of the match award for his maximum 3 wins. Another guest player, Andrew Ryder picked up 1 win and 5 team points.
In Division Two the early leaders are Cwmbran Lions following their 23-12 win over Cwmbran Devils. Player of the match was the Lions' Haydn Skinner with 2 wins and 8 team points. Skinner was well supported by Nigel Gore, making a welcome return to table tennis after a couple of seasons out with injury, and John Williams, with 2 wins each. For the Devils, Stan Williams picked up 2 wins and Finley McNeil 1 win.
In second place are Cwmbran Dynamos who defeated new team North Gwent Terriers, 19-9. All the Dynamos players, Alex Jones, Richard Lownsborough and Will Smith-Haddon collected 2 wins each. However they were all beaten by the player of the match Michal Policht.
Third place in the division is occupied by Cwmbran Fellows who beat Cwmbran Panthers 19-9. The player of the match was the Fellows' Wayne Ford with 3 wins and he was well supported by guest player Lincoln Alford with 2 wins. For the Panthers, Howard Gaut picked up 2 wins and there were wins for Mick Mellor and Damian Luckanic on his league debut.
