5th March 2019 Match Reports

The final matches of the Eastern Valley Table Tennis League 2018/19 season were completed this week. Cwmbran Aztecs celebrated their Division One title with a convincing 27-8 win over a depleted Blaenavon Aces team. Player of the match was the Aztecs' Tony Collins with maximum wins and he was well supported by Andrew Ryder and Mark Farrow, also with three wins. All the Aces players, Iestyn Howells and guest players John Thomas and Sam Slatter fought hard for their eight team points.

With Cwmbran Blues already secure in second place the other match in Division One saw the battle for third place decided. It was YMCA Preachers who finish in third place following their 22-11 win over Cwmbran Tigers thanks to a player of the match performance from David Lloyd with maximum wins. Lloyd was well supported by Claire Flannagan with two wins and Eric Turner with one win.

The battle for the Division Two title went to the last match of the season and it was Cwmbran Eccentrics who came out on top with a 26-5 win over Cwmbran Devils. Player of the match was guest player Wayne Ford, substituting for the unavailable Ian Shipley, with three wins. Ford was well supported by John Thomas also with three wins and Lincoln Alford with two wins. For the Devils guest player Mick Mellor picked up their solitary win.

Finishing in second place after a season long battle with the Eccentrics were North Gwent Cougars, who finished their season with a 27-6 win over a depleted Cwmbran Lions.  The Cougars provided the player of the match in Sam Slatter and he was well supported by Michel Policht and Jon Deacon, also with three wins. For the Lions, John Williams fought hard to take all the Cougar players to deciding sets before losing out in the end.

The final match in the division saw third placed Cwmbran Dynamos defeat Cwmbran Panthers 24-9 with Richard Lownsbrough collecting the player of the match award. He was well supported by Alex Jones, also with three wins and guest player Jon Deacon with one win and six team points.
