25th February 2020 Match Reports

In this weeks' matches in Division One of the Eastern Valley Table Tennis League, the leaders Cwmbran Aztecs defeated Cwmbran Tigers 23-16 to virtually seal the title with two matches remaining. However, in this match they needed to fight hard to overcome their sixth placed Tigers. Player of the match was the Aztecs' Mark Edmunds with 3 wins and he was well supported by Tony Collins with 2 wins and Andrew Ryder with 1 win. Despite their defeat they had the honour of producing the unexpected result of the season with Michal Luckanic beating top ranked Tony Collins in 5 games. There were also wins for the other Tiger players, Roshan Rai and Jeraze Dhanboora.

Blaenavon Aces occupy the runner-up position following their 20-9 victory over North Gwent Cougars. Player of the match was Ben Allen with maximum wins and he was well supported by Jon Allen, also with 3 wins. For the Cougars there were single wins each for Sam Slatter, Laura Price and Michael Policht.

Cwmbran Blues moved into third place after their 22-13 win over their main challengers for the position, Cwmbran Preachers, although  the Preachers do have a game in hand. Player of the match was the Blues Jozef Sujanec with 3 wins and he was well supported by Dave Lloyd, also with 3 wins and guest player Dave Groundsell with 1 win. For the Preachers, David Lloyd and Eric Turner both registered single wins.

In Division Two the leaders Cwmbran Dynamos beat third placed Cwmbran Lions 20-13. Player of the match was the Dynamos' Alex Jones whose 3 wins included a good victory over Nigel Gore. Jones was well supported by Richard Lownsbrough with 2 wins and Will Smith-Haddon with 1 win. For the Lions Nigel Gore picked up 2 wins and John Williams 1 win.  

In second place, six points behind the leaders but with a game in hand, are Cwmbran Eccentrics who beat Cwmbran Panthers 24-8 in their latest match. As in Division One this match also saw an unexpected result with the Panthers' Damian Luckanic defeating the second ranked player in the division, John Thomas. Player of the match was the Eccentrics guest player Michal Policht with 3 wins and he was well supported by Thomas and Lincoln Alford with 2 wins each. For the Panthers' Luckanic and Howard Gaut recorded single wins each.

In the final match in Division Two, North Gwent Terriers recorded their first win of the season when beating Cwmbran Fellows 17-14, thanks to a player of the match performance from Tommy Woodland with 3 wins. Woodland was well supported by Joel Price with 2 wins. For the Terriers, guest player Finley McNeil picked up 2 wins, Alan Rees 1 win and guest player Dan Tagean also with 1 win.
