#TableTennisDay is a trend-setter

From trending on Twitter to TV and radio appearances, the fifth annual National #TableTennisDay engaged with millions.

#TableTennisDay was trending around lunchtime alongside two of the day’s biggest news stories – the Cliff Richard privacy case verdict and the retirement of British Lions rugby captain Sam Warburton – as well as Prime Minister’s Questions in Parliament.

Paralympic gold medallist Will Bayley appeared on Chris Evans’ Breakfast Show on BBC Radio 2, while Classic FM mentioned the day in its round up of interesting and quirky things going on. Between them, the two shows have more than 11 million listeners each week.

BBC Look East attended our main event in Milton Keynes and broadcast a feature last night which included interviews with Table Tennis England Chief Executive Sara Sutcliffe and star guests Aaron McKibbin and Maria Tasptsinos. Maria had also given an interview with BBC Three Counties Radio to preview the day.

At Halton TTC, BBC Radio Merseyside featured the day with a broadcast from an over-50s session.

On social media, posts using the hashtag #TableTennisDay reached more than 950,000 people, while many thousands more engaged on Facebook and Instagram.

Below you can see some of the highlights from our showcase event in Milton Keynes.

The #TableTennisDay tour of Milton Keynes started off with Aaron McKibbin visiting secondary school pupil at the Sir Leon Herbert Academy. He then joined Maria Tsaptsinos and shoppers at intu Milton Keynes, where the pair demonstrated their skills and challenged the public to win a point off them. They then went head-to-head to see who would be victorious in the world of virtual reality table tennis, shortly followed by a match in the Snozone in -5 degrees!
