Chairman of Harrogate Table Tennis Association, Graham Bowland, is calling on table tennis enthusiasts in the Harrogate and Ripon area and beyond to give whatever support they can to the Staveley Table Tennis Marathon. The date for the 2017 event is now fixed for 18/19 November at Staveley Village Hall.Graham has undertaken to help this year both in terms of playing non-stop for 24 hours and also by helping to raise money.
Ken Barker (organiser of the Staveley Table Tennis Marathon) is the man behind this remarkable endeavour. In the last 17 years his event has raised just over £90,500 for a range of notable charities including Macmillan Cancer Relief, St Michael’s Hospice and Children in Distress and a long list of many others. Ken is in his mid-eighties and is still going strong. He is inundated with requests for funding and he likes to spread it around local, regional, national and international charities. Ken’s target this year is to go beyond the £100,000 mark.
Graham Bowland is hoping to gain support from neighbouring Leeds and the Yorkshire Table Tennis Association. He says, “I'm going to set up a timetable and ask players to come along for 30 minutes/hour and hopefully spread it through the day/night. With 5 tables we can have 10 players and 5 scorers so plenty of scope to contribute and raise money.”
Sponsorship is through so much per game (scoring is 11-up with no deuce) played in the 24 hours or just a donation. Graham himself hopes to get through around 260 games in 24 hours with each game scored and recorded.
Refreshments will be available and there will be a raffle (donated prizes would be appreciated).
