Bexhill Tournament 2018

Bexhill Table Tennis Tournament Report

11th February 2018

Bexhillians Table Tennis Club ran another successful tournament on Sunday, 11th February 2018 at their club at the Bexhill Youth and Community Centre, Station Road, Bexhill. The tournament was open to any affiliated Table Tennis England player within the counties of East and West Sussex and there was a good entry of 26 players from around the area. It was particularly pleasing to see some junior players entering.

The day started with Open Singles groups and as expected the four top seeds made their way to the Semi-finals after winning their respective groups, although there were some close contests on the way. However, at the Semi-final stage the Number 1 seed, John Wilson, and the Number 2 seed, Ryan Warner, succumbed to the cagey play of Bob Lowe and Roy Funnell respectively. Bob Lowe beat his fellow Bexhillians Club mate, John Wilson, 11-9 in the fifth and final end. Ryan Warner, also of Bexhillians, was defeated by the Tackleway player, Roy Funnell in four. The final was a more straightforward affair with Bob Lowe winning in three straight, proving too strong for Roy Funnell.

The draw for the Open Doubles threw up some interesting pairings. The event started with groups before moving into the knockout stage. Probably the strongest partnership of the day, John Wilson, Bexhillians, and Danny Rickaby, Tackleway, took the title and the trophies with a straightforward win in the final over Sue Pingram and Phil Toze, both of Tackleway. The Open Drawn Doubles has proved a popular event previously and it proved so once again.

A big thank to everyone who supported the tournament this year which was played in a competitive but friendly atmosphere.
