Hollington Academy A took a massive step towards retaining their Division One title in the Hastings & District Table Tennis League, winning 6-4 away at closest rivals Bexhill A. Paul Barry and Nathan Darby both won two for Academy but Bexhill had the player of the match in unbeaten David Rayment who went to five in all his sets, two of which went to deuce in the decider. The Academics stormed into a 6-1 lead before a strong comeback from Bexhill denied them a fourth point.
Bexhill now trail by five points and have a lot to do.
In the relegation zone, Tackleway C and Bexhill G fought out a 5-5 draw but Tackleway must have fancied their chances at 5-2 up. Roger Pingram scored a maximum for Tackleway while Ryan Heselden and Bob Lowe both won twice for Bexhill.
Robin Gibbs returned for Hollington Academy B in an 8-2 win at bottom side Tackleway B. Gibbs won two alongside maximums from Rose Rainton and Sam Collins but Tackleway came so close to a point when Martin Richards lost out to Collins at 14-16 in the decider.
Tigers A’s lead in Division Two is down to two points after they were held 5-5 by NALGO A for whom Paul Hyland claimed a comfortable maximum. Dave Mitchell and Chris Woods both won two for the leaders who had to win the last two contests to claim a share of the points.
Second placed Bexhill E took advantage as Pam Winter, Paul Welford and Dan Starnes beat Hollington B 10-0.
In third place, Tackleway D are in danger of losing touch with the leaders as they lost 7-3 to Tackleway E with Dave Wilson unbeaten and Peter Wilson winning twice for the E side.
Hollington Academy D beat Bexhill F 8-2 with maximums for Kevin Barry and Peter Watters.
In Division Three, Hollington E lost ground on the leaders when an Andy Murphy maximum helped Saints C to a 5-5 draw despite two wins each for Neil Pankhurst and Rob Clemence for Hollington.
Hollington E recovered to beat NALGO B 9-1 with Pankhurst, Clemence and Trevor Fountain unbeaten.
