Hastings League players, almost exclusively from the Bexhill club, had a successful day at the Eastbourne & District Table Tennis League Veterans Closed Championships, played on Sunday at Shinewater Community Centre.
Martin Kellaway (Bexhill & Eastbourne Borough) dominated the day’s events, winning the blue riband Over 40 Singles for the second time, beating second seed Tony Rowell (Laughton) in the final 9-11, 11-6, 11-5, 11-6. Kellaway started badly before almost stealing the first game and going on to take control.
He had earlier beaten Tina Beaney (Bexhill & Willingdon) in the semi-final.
Kellaway then combined with Anthony Sidoli (Borough) to take the Doubles in four games against Tony Anderson and Graham Primett (Bexhill & Bishopstone).
Sidoli prevented a hat-trick of titles for Kellaway in an epic final of the Over 50 Singles, winning 10-12, 11-6, 9-11, 11-9, 11-5. Kellaway beat Primett in straight games in their semi-final.
Top seed Brian Busbridge (Bexhill & Borough) won the Over 70 Singles, played as a group in which he was undefeated. Nigel Cromey (Polegate) was runner-up.
Rowell gained some compensation for his defeat in the Over 40s when he took the Over 60 Singles, beating Primett in the final 11-2, 12-10, 11-7. Primett beat Busbridge in the semi-finals, after Busbridge had beaten second seed Anderson in a group which also contained Pam Winter (Bexhill & Borough).
