Bexhill A’s grip on Division One of the Hastings & District Table Tennis League

was loosened as they were surprisingly held to a 5-5 draw at resurgent Tackleway A.

Roy Funnell hit his way to an excellent maximum for Tackleway while Martin Kellaway won two for Bexhill, who made three changes to their line up.

A four point win for Hastings Academy A at Bexhill D would ensure parity with Bexhill at the top for Christmas.

Also short of festive cheer were Academy B, who were without Dave Butler and went down 6-4 to Bexhill C, despite three wins from James Winchester. Graham Gillett and John Wilson won two apiece for Bexhill, as Academy B slipped to fourth.

Third on sets won are much improved Academy D who had Faldie Adams, Nick Standen and Scott Bills unbeaten in a 10-0 whitewash of Bexhill B although the losers will feel aggrieved at losing twice at 13-11 in the fifth.

More close calls in Division Two where Academy G had a much needed 6-4 win over Bexhill F with Andy Murphy unbeaten. Bexhill were unfortunate in that Norman Beaney, perhaps feeling the effects of beating Dave Watters 17-15 in the fifth, was forced to concede his last singles through injury. Academy G are still at the foot of the table but now within sight of their rivals.

Monarchs A won 6-4 at Hollington B with a Bob Lowe maximum and two wins from Alison Jordan.  Rob Clemence won two for Hollington.

Monarchs B returned to the top of Division Three with a 6-4 defeat of Willett & Phillips in which Peter Harding was unbeaten. Phil Bailey and Ken McEwan both won two for Willett & Phillips.

Tackleway H and Bexhill I drew 5-5 after Tackleway had led 3-0. Bexhill’s George Reidy won three while Andy Holmes and Phil Talbot of Tackleway won two apiece.

Highpoint of the match came with Jim Leppard’s win over Chris Floyd 12-14, 6-11, 11-9, 12-10, 12-10 for Bexhill.

Tackleway F beat Nalgo B 9-1 with three wins for Peter Saunders and Brian Leggett and two for Steve Milton.
