The Watts Cup knock-out tournament of the Hastings & District Table Tennis League is set to provide the perfect end to a season of exceptional quality after Hollington Academy A beat Bexhill C  5-3 in a thrilling semi-final.

The singles matches were shared 3-3 but the Academy’s doubles prowess won the day.

Paul Barry (Academy) and Graham Gillett (Bexhill) both won both their two singles with Gillett beating Bashar Ubaid 12-14, 11-9, 6-11, 13-11, 13-11 after Academy cruised the opening doubles. Barry then beat Andy Chapman before Gillett had a four-game win over Nathan Darby.

John Wilson beat Ubaid to put Bexhill 3-2 up but Academy stepped up a gear to take the next three in straight games.

Academy A will play Saints A in the final after Hollington Academy D conceded.

In the Minor Trophy, Division Two runners-up Hollington A had a comfortable 5-1 win over Third Division champions Saints C.  Shaun Godfrey and Kevin Barry were unbeaten for the winners, while Danny Gurden picked up the consolation for Saints.

Division One fixtures terminated with an occasionally heated meeting of Bexhill A and Bexhill D, won 8-2 by the former with three wins for Rob Warner and two each for Ryan Warner and Martin Kellaway. The result clinched second place for the A side and the two key wins for Kevin McEwan and Tina Beaney were enough to move the D side out of the second relegation spot at the expense of Hollington Academy D.

In Division Three, Tackleway F needed to take four points from Hollington E to pip Hollington C for the runners-up place. The young Hollington E side did their clubmates proud in a 5-5 draw with Yasar Akar and Tristan Hyland winning two each. Peter Saunders was unbeaten for Tackleway.

In Division Two Hollington B beat Monarchs A 6-4 with two wins for Rob Clemence and Ryan Demeza enough to counter the maximum from Monarchs’ Bob Lowe.
