Hastings Academy A took another giant step towards retaining the championship of the Hastings & District Table Tennis League Division One when they beat third-placed Academy B 6-4. Paul Barry won three and Fraser Kent two for the A side and James Winchester won two for the losers. The two sides won alternate sets up to 3-3, with Kent starting proceedings with an excellent win over Dave Butler. The next set was critical, with Ryan Heselden (A) beating John Wond (B) in five games before the A side took the next two to secure the win.

A tremendous match at Bexhill saw Bexhill C draw 5-5 with Tackleway A. Six sets went to five games but the exception was Bexhill’s Graham Gillett who did not drop a game in his maximum. Michael Funnell and James Gorridge both won two for Tackleway.

With Academy E out of action, Tackleway C increased their lead in Division Two with an 8-2 win over Bexhill E in which Adrian Goodrum and Mike Charter were unbeaten and Kevin Rowe won two.

Bexhill F won a nailbiting affair with Monarchs A 6-4 with Tina Beaney winning three and Norman Beaney two while Bob Lowe won two for Monarchs.  Monarchs took the doubles 11-9 in the fifth to lead 4-2 before the Bexhill comeback culminated in a fine win for Tina Beaney over Lowe in five games.

Maximums from Aaron Pain and Harvey Webb led Tackleway E to a 7-3 win over Hollington B.

The meeting of the top two in Division Three saw Bexhill I come out on top 8-2 against Monarchs B when they had George Reidy unbeaten and Adam Ward and Trevor Towner winning two each. Andrew Edwards won two for Monarchs and was unlucky not to deprive Reidy of his unbeaten record when he lost 10-12 in the fifth after leading 2-0.

Peter Agar won three and Peter Lilja two for Tackleway G in the 5-5 draw with Hollington D for whom Trevor Fountain won two.

Willett & Phillips went down 6-4 at Hollington C despite Phil Bailey’s maximum. Keith Young and Pete Shoesmith both won two for Hollington.
