Hosts end England hopes of gold

Hosts India ended English hopes in three semi-finals at the Commonwealth Championships today.

Tom Jarvis, up against top seed and world No 24 Sathiyan Gnanasekaran, gave a good account of himself, despite the 4-0 scoreline, particularly pushing his opponent in the opening game.

Gnanasekaran lost 4-3 (9-11, 6-11, 11-5, 11-8, 17-15, 7-11, 11-9) to compatriot Harmeet Desai in the gold medal match. Jarvis has the consolation of a bronze.

There will be bronze too for Tin-Tin Ho, who was beaten in five by Ayhika Mukherjee, who went on to beat Madhurika Patkar 4-0 (11-6, 11-4, 11-9, 19-17) in another all-Indian final.

And in the Men’s Doubles, the Indian juggernaut was also unstoppable as Amalraj Anthony & Manav Thakkar defeated Jarvis & Sam Walker 3-1 to set up a final against top seeds Gnanasekaran & Sharath Achanta. And it was Anthony & Thakkar who prevailed 3-1 (8-11, 11-6, 13-11, 12-10).

England end the championships in Cuttack with two team silvers, two individual bronzes and one men’s doubles bronze.
