HEREFORD JUNIORS IN BIRMINGHAM

Hereford Juniors travelled to Wood Green Academy in Wednesbury (which is between Birmingham and Wolverhampton) on Saturday 11th October for the first of 4 sessions in the West Midlands region of the National Junior League.  With Zoe Castle no longer a junior and Matt Knight out with a broken ankle, our team was Elliot Volpe, Jake Price and Harry Hales.

With no doubles games and just two singles each, the match consists of 6 games.  There were 18 teams in total with 3 nominal divisions created.  A second session will be held in December after which time all the teams will be ranked and put into the final 3 divisions.  The last two sessions will then involve a home and away match against each of the teams in the relevant division.

Our first match was against Wood Green A and a 5-1 win proved a great start.  The only loss was Harry against their No2, who Elliot only just beat after going 2-0 down.

Second match was against North Birmingham and a hard fought draw was a fair result.  Jake was unlucky not to beat their No1 after being 2-0 up.  This was a tough team with very different styles -experience of playing these types of games will only do our team good.

The last match before lunch was against West Bridgford Blues and another 5-1 win.  Harry had a tight game against their No3 to lose in three close games.

After a light lunch and plenty of knocking up to keep them on form, the next game was against Colebridge Braves.  This game finished a 6-0 whitewash with only one game going to 4.  This team were to finish bottom of the table.

Last match of the day was against Gloucester B and things were a bit different, with the team losing 5-1.  Elliot won the single game in 4 against the Gloucester No2.

The next session will be 6th December and will be against different opposition and so it’s still all to play for.

Well done to all three players for their efforts on the day and in particular to Elliot for winning 9 out of his 10 games.
