COUNTY JUNIORS MATCH REPORT 2

Hereford Juniors

The second session of the West Midlands region of the National Junior League took place on Saturday 6th December 2014 at Wood Green Academy in Wednesbury.

Elliot Volpe was unable to attend this session and so our team was Matt Knight, Jake Price and Harry Hales.  This was Matt’s first competitive table tennis this season, after breaking his ankle in September.

The format was the same as last time, 3 divisions, each with 6 teams in each.  Our aim was to finish in the top two to qualify for division one in the last two sessions.

The first match was against Wood Green B and a 4-2 win proved to be a solid start.  Jake was unlucky to lose to their Number 1, 12-10 in the fifth.

The second match was against Colebridge Braves.  Hereford proved far too strong winning 6-0, with all games, except one, being won 3-0.

The last match before lunch was against West Bridgford Reds and a 4-2 win was a really good result.  Jake had a great 3-0 win against their No. 1 who had earlier easily beaten Matt. In their other two games both Matt and Jake had hard fought wins in 5 ends.  Harry played his part with a good 3-1 win against the number 3.

Lunch time sees a mass exodus from the hall as many players pay a visit to the local KFC!  But our boys ate their healthy (!) lunches and had an extra few minutes practice.  Next up was Woodfield, who ended up winning the group.  With strength in depth they defeated Hereford 5-1.  The one win coming from Jake against their number 3.  Despite the match score this was a really tight affair, with some cracking games to watch.  Matt’s loss to their number 2, 12-10 in the fifth, showed some great attacking table tennis.

Last match of the day was against Gloucester C and the boys knew that a good score was needed to keep them in with a shout and they did this with a 5-1 win.  Unfortunately despite all their hard work they missed out on second place by ONE point.

Without being too biased Matt played extremely well, winning 7 out of his 10 after not playing at all this season so far and playing at No. 1.  Jake won 8 out of 10 and Harry 5, so it was a really good team effort.  Very proud of all three of them.

Without Elliot playing, it was always going to be a tough challenge to finish in the top two, but to miss out by the one point was cruel, particularly as they only lost one match.
