HEREFORD COUNTY JUNIORS MATCH REPORT 3

The third session of the West Midlands region of the National Junior League took place on Saturday 24th January 2015 at Wood Green Academy in Wednesbury.

We were able to field our full strength squad of Elliot Volpe, Matt Knight and Jake Price.

For those of you who have read the previous report, you will be aware of the disappointment of the team missing out on playing in the top division for the last two sessions.  However, the writer was mistaken in the way that the organiser formulated the divisions and so rather than missing out by one point, they actually qualified for Division 1 by two points!

So the first match in Division 1 was against title favourites Gloucester A, whose players had not lost a single game in the previous two sessions.  So it was no surprise that our boys lost 6-0.  However, both Elliot and Matt took the Glos No. 1 to 4 and Jake did very well in losing to the No. 3 in 5.

The team then did really well in the second match to bounce back, beating Woodfield A 6-0.  This was not only a great result after the Gloucester defeat, but it was also a turnaround of the 5-1 defeat to the same team in the last session.

The third match was against West Bridgford Reds who we beat 4-2 in December.  However, it was the opposition who did a turnaround this time winning 4-2.  Star of the match was the “Reds” No.2 Jess, whose improvement from last time was hard to believe, beating both Elliot and Jake 3-0.  Matt and Jake won one each, with Elliot losing a topsy-turvy game to the No1. in 5.

After lunch was another tough match  against Burton & Uxbridge A, resulting in a bit of a drubbing 6-0.  Not a lot to report here other than Matt losing a tight match in 4 to the No.1 and Jake losing in 4 to the No.2.

Following that defeat, I needed to motivate the boys for the final match of the day against North Birmingham.  They had previously played them in the first session back in October which resulted in a draw.  No need to worry though; a good performance resulted in a 4-2 win, one each from Matt and Elliot, and Jake winning both his, including the final match to seal the win.

Really well done to the boys.  It was a tough and tiring day, but as usual they did us proud.  The table below shows the current league standing. They will play the same teams again at the end of February.  Third place at this stage is a fantastic achievement.
