HEREFORD COUNTY JUNIORS MATCH REPORT 4

Hereford Juniors

The fourth and final session of the West Midlands region of the National Junior League took place on Saturday 28th February 2015 at Wood Green Academy in Wednesbury.

Our team was again Elliot Volpe, Matt Knight and Jake Price.

The story so far meant that at the half way stage of the final two sessions, the team had done very well to be in third place of Division 1, but only one point ahead of West Bridgford Reds in fourth.

Gloucester A were first up and with quality in depth, it was always going to be hard to prevent another 6-0 whitewash.  However the boys were very positive, Matt losing in 4 to the number one 13-15, 5-11, 13-11, 9-11.  Elliot then lost 10-12, 10-12, 11-13 to the number 2.  The highlight of this match was Matt beating the number 3 in another really close match 15-13, 11-9, 12-14, 13-11. A  5-1 loss was the final result.

Woodfield A were next up and after a great 6-0 win last time, the team were ready to go again.  Woodfield however had brought in a stronger number 1 for this match and we finished up with a draw.  Star of this one was Jake, winning his two, with yet another very close match, beating the number 2, 12-10, 7-11, 10-12, 12-10, 13-11.  Elliot gained the other win.

West Bridgford Reds were the last game before lunch, with this being the third time we had played them this season.  Last time resulted in a 4-2 loss and the boys were not looking forward to playing the number 2 (Jessica) who had whipped them 3 straight last time.  Highlights were Elliot against Jess and this turned out to be the closest match of the day with Elliot winning 12-10, 12-14, 12-14, 11-5, 12-10.  Matt then had another cracking win, three straight against the Number 1.  Jake also gained his revenge over Jessica winning in 5.  The match score of 5-1 to Hereford was probably the best they played all day.

A rest for lunch and then it was Burton & Uxbridge A who again beat us 6-0.  However yet again the boys turned up the heat.  In the last session they only managed to win 2 ends in total, but this time only one match was lost 3-0 and Matt lost in 5 to the number 3.

The last match of the day was against North Birmingham whom we had beaten 4-2 last time.  As last time, Jake won his two, which included revenge in a great match against the number two who had beaten him at the English Schools competition in February: 7-11, 9-11, 11-8, 14-12, 14-12.  A draw was the final result, with Elliot playing some quality table tennis to beat the Number 1 three straight.

So that was it; all three boys were absolutely shattered after some really impressive table tennis.

The number of close individual games was excellent to see and the fact that they are now starting to convert these close games to wins is very satisfying.  I think that playing in Hereford Division 1 has made a big difference to them all this year.

The final table is shown below and to consolidate third place is thoroughly deserved.  To put this into perspective, this time last year, they finished 4th in Division 2.
