HEREFORDSHIRE COUNTY TABLE TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS
VETERAN, CADET AND JUNIOR COMPETITIONS
The Herefordshire County Table Tennis Championships for 2016 started on Sunday January 3rd at Queen Elizabeth Humanities College, Bromyard, when the Cadet, Junior and Veteran players were involved in 8 different events.
All the competitions started in Round Robins before going through to later knock out stages.
With 19 players in the Veteran Singles event all the seeded players reached the last 16 and only one fell before the quarter finals. At this stage No.1 seed, Ola Andersson played Steve Brown and dropped the first 2 games before winning the next three by 5, 2 and 4. In the lower half Toby Eckley (No.2) beat Nigel Foreshew in straight games so Andersson and Eckley will play the final set on Finals Night which is held in February after the Senior events have been completed.
In the Restricted Veteran event for anyone who has not won this or the main event in the last 5 years, all four seeded players won their groups and in the semi finals No.1 seed, Mark Stubbs fell to Brian Kitchener by 8, 10, --6, -7 and 7. No 2 seed, Jon Allen, fared better when he beat Steve Knight by 7, -1, 3 and 5.
In the Super veterans (over 60’s) semi-finals Harry Jutle, playing in this event for the first time, beat Huan Davies in straight games but Brian Kitchener played Trevor Davies in the lower half and at the end of a very long day, Kitchener ran out winner by 5, -11, 10, -10 and 5.
The first Doubles Semi-final was between Ola Andersson and Toby Eckley and Steve Brown and Steve Knight. The Andersson Eckley pairing proved too strong for the two Steves, and on Finals Night will play the other successful pairing of Stubbs and Kitchener. Both these sets were won in straight games.
A really good standard of play was shown in the Cadet and Junior competitions. Two young boys, still in the cadet age range, proved too strong for any of the Junior boys and Jake Price and Kyle Day will be playing for two titles on Finals Night. These events were organised for the 10 boys taking part by Mark Owen and Steve Knight. They also played a doubles competition when they were paired with three different partners to accumulate points by winning a set. They also had a fun event playing with hard bats without sponge rubbers – quite a challenge for the boys.
The Senior events will be played at QE School on February 21st and the Finals in the evening of February 26th. On both these dates spectators are welcome and admission is free. Entries for the Seniors Tournament close on January 23rd. Entry forms can be picked up from the HTTL website or from Cicely Palmer on 01684 540 595 or email@example.com
