HEREFORD COUNTY JUNIOR CHAMPIONS

Hereford Champions!

The fourth and final session of the West Midlands region of the National Junior League took place on 16th January 2016 at Wood Green Academy in Wednesbury.

Our team was Elliot Volpe, Jake Price and Matt Knight.

The results from the last session were carried forwards and so this meant that Hereford were in a strong position at the top of Division 1.

The first match was against Colebridge A whom we had beaten 5-1 last time.  Things did not quite go to plan after we went 2-0 down with both games lost in 5.  However, the boys rallied and we finished with a 3-3 draw.  Not the result we wanted at this early stage, but nothing to panic about.

We then played the local derby match against Malvern again, who were rightly confident after being in second place in the table.  This was the third time we had played them and Hereford proved to be too strong with a 5-1 win.

The third match was against Woodfield A and the boys really started to play well now, with a dominant performance resulting in a 6-0 win and only 2 games not won 3 straight.

A rest for lunch and then it was Sutton who unfortunately only had 2 players.  They did manage to borrow a player, whose results would not actually count in the match score, but both her games were really good five setters.  Hereford won 5-1 and a really good win for Elliot, 3 straight against the number one.

The final match was against Draycott A who were unbeaten so far on the day and were certainly the best team we had faced.  Yet another dominant performance however, from Hereford resulted in a 4-2 win, the same as last time.  Matt’s very last match was to prove to be his only loss on the day.  The whole match went on for so long that there was quite a crowd watching at the end.

The day was now finished and a fantastic performance by Hereford meant that we finished top of Division 1 as Champions and in fact increased the lead over second place to 9 points.  They also remained unbeaten over all four sessions.

I would like to say very well done to Elliot, Jake and Matt, all of whom have played some excellent table tennis, been a pleasure to be with and represented Hereford with pride.  I must also thank Kyle Day for his vital contribution to the overall result, finishing with figures of 18/20.

Congratulations to Matt who picked up an award for having won the most games over the 4 sessions 37/40 and he only missed out by 1% on having the best overall average.
