Herefordshire Juniors Report - National Junior League 2017/18

This season a junior team was entered into the National Junior League (NJL) at Woodgreen Academy. The competition at Woodgreen was deemed to be of a higher standard than that previously encountered in Bristol during the 2016/17 event and thus a good opportunity for our juniors to experience a better quality of opposition. There were initially 7 experienced Herefordshire juniors signed on to play in this season's competition but disappointingly only 2 of the originally earmarked players committed to play (Zak Weaver & Jack O’Nions). It was then necessary to enrol less experienced younger players to enable our participation in the competition and I must give my personal thanks to these players (James Forster, Lucas Pinches & Jacob Gane) for participating at short notice. I am certain that the experience will serve them well for future NJL events.

The NJL was competed over 4 Saturdays. The results of each Saturday is summarised as follows:

Session 1 - Sat 14th October 17 Hfd Vs Hamstead B ( Lost 5-4) Hfd Vs Woodgreen A (Lost 5-4) Hfd Vs Colebridge Girls (Lost 6-3)

Session 2 was a particularly challenging day for the boys with quick turnaround games giving little time for rest. Unfortunately, Zak Weaver was very unwell on the day but despite this he battled on regardless. After sessions 1 & 2, the teams were split into groups for the final 2 sessions dependent on results in sessions 1 & 2. This meant that Hereford dropped into Division 3 of 4 for the remainder of the competition with results as follows:

Session 3 – Sat 27th January 18 Hfd Vs Hamstead C (Won 6-3) Hfd Vs Woodgreen B (Lost 3-6) Hfd Vs Colebridge C (Lost 4-5)

Session 4 – Sat 24th February 18 Hfd Vs Hamstead C (Won 8-1) Hfd Vs Woodgreen B (Won 5-4) Hfd Vs Colebridge C (Lost 4-5)

Final results saw Hereford finish second in Division 3. There were some great performances from all 3 players during the final session with Zak Weaver receiving an award as ‘Player of the day’ for going unbeaten and without dropping a set all day. Special thanks to all the players for their participation and especially to James Forster, Lucas Pinches & Jacob Gane for their short notice participation and for outstanding effort by them all against higher graded opponents. I truly hope the experience serves them well and that they participate in future NJL events in coming years. Garry Weaver
