The final matches in the Midland Veterans Table Tennis League have been completed with the two Hinckley teams having vastly different seasons. The A Team playing in Division Two finishing second. Their last two matches saw them lose heavily to Stafford who were the eventual Champions of the Division, they went on to beat Nottingham C by 6 sets to 4 with both Pete Jamieson and Jason Woodfield collecting two wins each for the Town. They played seven matches winning four and drawing one to finish with 43points in second spot, thirteen points behind Stafford.
The B team did not fare so well losing by 9 sets to 1 to Nuneaton b for whom Danny Whittaker won all three with Kevin Edwards taking the one for the town. In their final match they drew 5 sets all with Cheltenham A, Russ Pettitt collecting two wins whilst teammates Jon Jacom and Barry Robinson won one each. This result could not stop them from finishing bottom of the table with 23pts, just two below Derby B who had 25pts. The B team played 7 matches won 1 and drew 2.
There was tension and disappointment at the semi-final stage of the Team Handicap Challenge. The match between Cat A and Barlestone A was a close run affair with Cat A taking a 4 set to 2 lead but Barlestone hit back when first Adam Pettitt (BA) defeated Pete Jamieson (Cat A) 31-8 to pull the scores closer and then Charlie Bateman (BA) had a tremendous tussle with Alex Mason (Cat A) finally closing the game out 31-30 to level the scores. Rhys Emery (Cat A) took on Russ Pettitt (BA) and won it 31-24 to claim the tie.
Disappointment in the other semi-final when last season’s winners were unable to field a team due to injury and had to concede the match, allowing Goons into the final to play Cat A at Caterpillar sports Club tonight.
Finally young Freya Wynne of the George Ward Club played in the Table Tennis England Inter-Regional Finals in Nottingham over the weekend and the 11 year old reached the semi-finals before going out by 3 games to 1.
