On Saturday October 7th the Yorkshire County Cadet 2nd team travelled to Rugby to compete in Division 1 of the Cadet County Championship. Three players from St Mary’s TTC, Che Goulbourne, Eashan Jawadi and Lennon Maughan were making their county debuts and were joined by Isabella Crooks and Hallie Fitton from the West Riding, who were also making their debuts.
From the first match all the players excelled in what was a difficult division. First Game was versus Staffs and 3 maximums from the Hull lads plus one from Isabella gave the team an excellent start with a 7 – 3 win. Next came the daunting proposition of playing Lancashire, the strongest team on paper. So it proved with a 9 – 1 defeat, a solitary win for the Yorkies but what a win it was for Che Goulbourne. Che, currently ranked at No. 34 playing against the No. 10 Lancastrian, Rhys Davies, Che came away with a tremendous 3-1 win.
Next up were are neighbours from Lincolnshire and again another 3 sets of maximum wins and 1 each from Hallie and Isabella saw an 8 – 2 win appear in the results. At the end of a long day the final match was against Cambridgeshire and ended with a meritable draw, with the Hull lads picking up 5 singles between them.
Che won 7 out 8 matches, Lennon 6 out of 8 and Ehsan 5 out of 8. Hopefully they will have enjoyed their day and be looking forward to the next weekend which will complete the divisions fixtures.
