Top 16 from Season 2016/17
Monday 11th December 2017
The evening started on a good note when all 16 invitees attended.
Dave Randerson started his defence of his title with a loss to Gauri Duhan in 5 long sets and set the tone for the evening of long and highly entertaining games. During the group stages there were no fewer than 16 games going to deuce and 8 five setters along the way. The quarter finals started at 9.50, an hour later than was originally envisaged.
Players making up the quarters were Chris Clinton and Rob Owen (who were drawn against each other for the third year running), Dave Randerson and Sean Madden, Phil Neale and Rob Anderson, Colin Hamilton and Gauri Duhan. 3 of the 4 quarters went to the fifth leg and victorious in these matches were Rob, Dave, Phil and Colin.
The semis saw Dave beat Rob (Owen) in five games and Phil beating Colin again in five games (15 – 13 in the fifth!) The final itself was one of the shortest games of the night with Dave successfully coming through in three sets to retain his title.
All in all a very entertaining nights table tennis and although finishing somewhat later than was anticipated credit must go to all the players who played exceptionally well and in good spirit.
