Week 11 match reports

Table Tennis Report by Malcolm Wenn

Two players take pride of place this week beating previously unbeaten players. In Division 1 Tim Baker came from a game down to defeat Liam Chan while in Division 3 young Ben Christian ended Chas Grill’s long winning sequence.

Division 3

Last week’s marathon match with Fortress obviously did Breakaway B some good as they overcame Ramsey B 8-2. Sam Callister and Aaron Faragher won two singles each and the doubles but their team mate Ben Christian went one better by inflicting the first defeat of the season on Chas Grills 11/8 11/9 11/9.

Matty Evans had a good night for Peel B in their 5-5 draw with Fortress. He just got the better of Mahmoud Hassan 11/7 in the fifth before going on to his hat trick. Pat Halliwell showed her improved form and resilience with wins against Andreas Gutzold 11/9 11/13 11/7 10/12 11/8 and Eann Mulhern 13/11 in the fourth game.

The lack of a third player for Peel D affected their chances in the Peel derby with their E team. Despite this Eann and Daniel Mulhern made it hard work for their opponents. Together they narrowly lost the doubles while Eann beat Fraser Dorling 11/8 in the fourth but missed out to Vishal Patel 11/8 8/11 8/11 12/10 10/12 and then to Dom Galante 8/11 9/11 15/13 11/5 7/11.

Oliver Cain and Chris Aspden provided valuable support to Kevin Drewry as Copy Shop C took the honours 6-4 against Peel C. Ashley Reid and Sean Cassidy grabbed two sets each and very nearly forced a draw but an 11/5 10/12 6/11 9/11 loss to Cain and Drewry in the doubles sealed their fate.

Division 2

All four matches ended in 8-2 score-lines.

Copy Shop B strengthened their hold at the top thanks to their win against Peel A. This was another match where the final score could have been very different. Danny Hamill edged it against Malcolm Lewis 12/10 in the fifth and Maggie Mulhern 15/13 in the fourth while Sean Drewry won 4 of his games 11/9 or 13/11 and together they beat Lewis and Les Wilson in the doubles 11/9 12/10 4/11 5/11 11/9.

Foxdale B came out on top against Tower C. Dave Callow defeated Ken Mitchell in five and Andy McLarney in four but couldn’t prevent a hat trick by Neil Quane who won 11/8 in their fifth game.

No fewer than five of the singles matches in the Travellers B and Tower B match were decided in the fifth game and in one of the others Colin Brown defeated Steve Curtis 13/11 20/18 9/11 11/8. Brown looked to be down and out at 1/6 in the fifth to Graham McFarlane but in his inimitable fashion he rallied to win 11/8. McFarlane did manage to salvage a team point by beating Stu Douglas while Dave Stevenson doubled Tower’s tally by defeating Stu Mason 7/11 11/5 8/11 11/4 11/9.

A good all round team performance saw Salmon River Spinners easily overcome Travellers C. Nigel Beattie and Tommy Cowin were unbeaten although it took five games for them to win the doubles against Alan Harding and Malcolm Wenn. The Travellers duo both narrowly beat Colin Barron in the singles. Harding won 11/5 in the fifth while Wenn came back in each game to win 11/9 11/7 12/10.

Division 1

Copy Shop A increased their lead at the top with an emphatic 8-2 victory over second placed Ramsey A. Maximums from Brian Crellin and Ronan O’Donnell including the doubles and a good win for Ewan Watterson against Mason McLarney ensured the Christmas break will be a happy time for the ‘Shoppers.’

It was the same result for Breakaway A but Travellers A could consider themselves hard done by in losing all but one of the five sets that went to 5 games. Paul Nelson was the exception coming back from 2 games down to overcome Chris Kewley 11/8 in the decider. By way of contrast Kewley lost 2 of the first 3 games against Gary Shilling but won the fifth 11/9.

The other matches in this league both finished 6-4. Baker’s defeat of Chan helped Tower A upset Arbory while Strathallan A were the victors over Foxdale A thanks largely to Andrew Horne who won his three singles although he was taken all the way by Will Bayley.

That’s all for now except to wish all players, officials and readers a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.
