WEEK 19 MATCH REPORTS

Table Tennis Report by Malcolm Wenn

In Division 1 Copy Shop A increased their lead to 11 points while Arbory A moved clear of Travellers A and Foxdale A who now share bottom place.

Congratulations to Copy Shop B team who have won promotion to Division 1. Is their lead of 22 points with two matches to go a record? Travellers C will be playing in Division 3 next season while Copy Shop C will almost certainly be in the play-off with either Peel B or C who are well ahead in Division 3.

Division 1

Copy Shop A’s quest for the title was helped by Ramsey A only having two players for their match with Strathallan A. Adam Teare was unbeaten as Ramsey managed to win six of the seven sets played. Mason McLarney defeated Julian Briercliffe 11/6 in the fifth and Andy Patterson 11/8 again in the fifth but lost out to his brother Haydn 13/15 in the fourth game.

Ewan Watterson joined Brian Crellin and Ronan McDonnell as Copy Shop A took maximum advantage and maximum points with a fine team performance against Tower A.

The return of John Magnall was instrumental as Arbory A moved out of the danger zone with a convincing victory over Travellers A. Magnall and Liam Chan won seven sets between them although Malcolm Cummings came close to upsetting Magnall but lost 11/9 10/12 12/14 5/11. Mike Tamarov had a good win against Cummings but couldn’t stop Paul Nelson and Gary Shilling from gaining two valuable points for the losers. Shilling and Cummings combined well in the doubles but Arbory took it 11/8 in the fifth.

Foxdale A and Travellers A are now locked together at the bottom of the league. Foxdale can consider that they were somewhat unlucky to have only taken three points from Breakaway A. Paul Corran used his greater experience to disappoint Rebecca Bayley 13/11 in the fifth game. This was one of sixteen games which ended with scores of 11/9 12/10 13/11 or 15/13 and Breakaway won eleven of these. Will Bayley impressed with wins against Paul Corran and Chris Kewley but Steve O’Hare won three singles and the doubles to see his side home.

Division 2

Having led the way all season Copy Shop B made certain of promotion with a convincing win against Tower C. Ewan Watterson must be delighted that his decision to drop down a division to be mentor to young Sean Drewry and Danny Hamill has paid dividends. More recently Adam Davies has played in place of Watterson as the team continued to dominate this league.

Just 8 points separates Travellers B, Foxdale B and Tower B who are all in with a chance of securing the play- off spot. Last week Travellers B had a great match with Peel A. Malcolm Lewis kept his nerve to beat both Stu Mason and Stu Douglas in the fifth games - 11/9 and 12/10 respectively but he came unstuck against Colin Brown. In another cliff hanger Douglas prevented a Les Wilson hat-trick with a last gasp 6/11 11/7 12/14 11/9 13/11 victory. Maggie Mulhern played well again and could easily have had more than a doubles success with Wilson to show for her efforts.

Four out of four for Mike Bayley saw Foxdale B continued their winning run but a spirited performance by Maurice Campbell and Malcolm Wenn of Travellers C deprived them of three points.

Nigel Beattie stood firm for Salmon River Spinners with three singles and the doubles with Colin Barron but two wins each for the Tower B trio keeps them in with a chance of the runner-up spot.

Division 3

It is still all to play for at the top. Peel C now lead Peel B by four points and must be slight favourites for the title. Peel C’s 10-0 defeat of Peel E looks comprehensive but Chris Holmes was stretched by Vishal Patel and Fraser Dorling. It was 9/11 11/6 16/14 11/9 against Patel and 9/11 11/6 12/10 7/11 11/5 against Dorling. It was another near miss for Patel against Ashley Reid who beat him 11/7 in the fifth.

It was a great shame that Peel B and Breakaway B ran out of time in their match. Four sets went all the way. Ben Christian came back to beat Matty Evans 8/11 3/11 11/9 11/9 19/17. Aaron Faragher lost in five to Steve Mitchell but scraped home against Will Cross 11/9 9/11 11/9 4/11 11/9. Sam Callister added to Cross’s woes by beating him 11/7 in their decider.

There was a close contest between Peel D’s George Melvin and Christin Maschmann of Ramsey B with the former taking the honours 15/13 14/12 6/11 11/9. Maschmann also lost to Eann Mulhern but beat Daniel Mulhern and teamed up with Chas Grills for a doubles success. Grills and Marion Forrest remained unbeaten in an 8-2 win.

Each time Copy Shop C and Fortress play each other Oliver Cain is involved in close games. This time Pat Halliwell beat him 11/9 12/10 14/16 11/3 and Mahmoud Hassan took their match 11/9 11/8 9/11 12/10. Fortress were a player short so Mahmoud and Halliwell took on Chris Aspden and Kevin Drewry in the doubles and won 11/9 in the fifth.
