SUPER SUB HELPS TOWER C DOUBLE THEIR WIN COUNT
DIVISION ONE
Copy Shop A (8) Arbory (2)
Top seed, Ronan McDonnell, was unavailable for table topping Copy Shop who therefore asked the B team’s Danny Hamill to come to their rescue. He did just that, winning two and narrowly losing to Jason Quirk who also acquired Arbory’s only other point by beating Jane Kneale in straight sets. Hamill, Kneale and Brian Crellin consigned Keeran Chan and, somewhat surprisingly, John Magnall to a pointless night. Copy Shop also snapped up the doubles to stay one point ahead of Breakaway.
Travellers A (1) Foxdale A (9)
Steve Ellis-Pearson played up for Travellers and nearly pulled-off two shock wins by attacking at every opportunity. Becky Bayley had to haul herself back from 2-1 down in sets and in a free flowing final frame the score reached 8/8 before her slippery serves finally finished him off. Will Bayley left it even later, surviving three match points before disappointing S E-P 11/4, 7/11, 2/11, 11/4, 14/12. That was the closest that he, Paul Nelson and Gary Shilling got to winning in the singles, although the latter two scraped home in the doubles 11/9 in the last set against Marc Townsend and Becky.
Breakaway A (9) Tower A (1)
Second placed Breakaway moved back to within a point of the top with a near white-wash of sixth placed Tower. Only John Callow could convert perspiration to points with a tactical 14/12, 9/11, 11/6, 12/10 victory overMason McLarney who, along with Darren Smethurst and Paul Corran, sent Tim Baker and Paul Callow home without a win.
Strathallan A (8) Copy Shop B (2)
Fourth placed Strathy’s Julian Briercliffe, Andy Patterson and Andy Horne were 7-0 up with just two singles and the doubles to play. Dario Mazzotta had failed to trouble the scorer but Sean Drewry and Danny Hamill respectively put paid to Patterson and Horne’s hat-trick hopes where, amazingly, nine of the ten final sets finishing at 11/9. Drewry spoiled the sequence in the last set which finished 11/8. Strathy swept up the doubles to leave Copy Shop well and truly in the relegation zone.
DIVISION TWO
Peel B (3) Tower C (7)
Bottom placed Tower doubled their win count thanks to substitute Wael Kassim’s superb hat-trick over the more experienced youngsters Matty Evans, Vishal Patel and their own substitute, Nathan Evans. Matty did well to beat Mike Chapman 11/9 in the fifth set and Dave Callow 12/10 after four sets, but the two from Tower both bagged a brace before losing the doubles to Matty and Vishal.
Foxdale B (9) Travellers C (1)
Travellers called upon Colin Brown who duly won his first match 11/7, 11/4, 9/11, 11/3 against Ken Mitchell then faded to two four sets defeats. Alan Harding and Jackie Gill also found sets hard to come by against second placed Foxdale, for whom Neil Quane and Mike Bayley added the doubles to their hat-tricks, so moving Travellers back closer to the relegation zone.
Tower B (7) Peel A (3)
Fifth placed Peel’s Malc Lewis smashed past the defensive Steve Curtis in three swift sets and counter-attacked to a similar conclusion against Graham McFarlane who won his other two. Marion Forrest made a welcome but unsuccessful return for Peel whereas, her team-mate Maggie Mulhern was embroiled in a topsy-turvy tactical marathon match with Curtis and purloined Peel’s final point 8/11, 6/11, 11/8, 11/9, 13/11. Top placed Tower’s hat-trick hero was Dave Parsons and he joined Curtis to capture the doubles in the final set against Lewis and Mulhern.
Salmon River Spinners (5) Travellers B (5)
Just two points separate these teams in the league so a draw was perhaps no surprise, although it is the first of the season for third placed Spinners for whom the league’s top seed, Nigel Beattie, scored yet another hat-trick. Tommy Cowin added the other two by beating David Stevenson and the ultra-busy Steve Ellis-Pearson. Stu Douglas ended Cowin’s hat-trick hopes and joined his fellow Travellers in robbing Colin Barron of everything other than a few sets. In the decisive doubles Douglas and Stevenson secured the draw by out-hitting Cowin and Beattie 13/15, 13/11, 13/11, 6/11, 11/7.
DIVISION THREE
Copy Shop C (8) Travellers D (2)
Malcolm Lambert and Rob Sim ensured the win with hat-tricks for top placed Copy Shop. Juan Moore Jr and Alex Buck both beat Pedro Cardoso for Travellers’ points and they nearly added another in the doubles, butSim and Henry Hyde sneaked in 11/6, 5/11, 14/12, 13/11, 13/11.Juan Moore Sr was also involved in a close encounter, losing a nail biter 11/9 in the final frame against Cardoso.
Breakaway B (8) Fortress Management Services (2)
Rhys Yardley made things difficult for second placed Breakaway, first by beating the divisional title holder, Aaron Faragher, in four sets and then Ben Christian in an exciting encounter 12/10, 8/11, 10/12, 14/12, 11/6. However, Yardley met his match against the division’s top seed Chris Kewley who anchored his team to an empathic victory over Yardley, Pat Halliwell and Karen Hassan.
Copy Shop D (9) IOM Junior Development Two (1)
JD’s Calvin Koske came back from 2-1 down in sets to overturn the more experienced George Melvin 3/11, 11/6, 12/14, 11/9, 11/3. Conversely, Koske couldn’t convert a 2-0 lead into another win against Chris Aspden who prevailed 11/8 in their final frame. Neither James Colgan nor Kerenza Baker could claim a set against Melvin, Aspden or Kevin Drewry and third placed Copy Shop also took the doubles.
Peel C (5) IOM Junior Development One (5)
The Peel team arrived a player short so JD1 started 3-0 up. Nathan Evans redressed the balance with his hat-trick which included a tense 14/12, 7/11, 8/11, 11/5, 12/10 final frame tie-breaker win over Wael Kassim who had beaten him earlier in their Division Two encounter. Fraser Dorling delivered the draw for Peel by beating Carl Blatcher and Marcus Koske, but lost in four close sets against Kassim who helped JD1 tie the match by winning the doubles with Koske.
