Greystone LLC sponsored Island Doubles Championship

GREYSTONE LLC sponsored Island Doubles Table Tennis Championships

These championships were held in the main hall at the NSC on Saturday 16 March 2013.

Seven teams, all from the first division of the IOMTTA, took part in some extremely competitive and well contest matches that were played on a round robin basis.

The winners, Paul Corran and Mason McLarney, and the runners-up both finished with five wins apiece so the outcome of their encounter determined the title. Paul and Mason only just won that roller-coaster match 10/12, 11/3, 15/13, 7/11, 14/12 against the island number one singles seed, Ronan McDonnell, and Mason’s younger brother Hadyn McLarney.

In their other matches Breakaway’s Paul Corran and Mason McLarney beat Jason Quirk and John Magnall from Arbory 11/5, 12/10, 11/7. They then lost to the scratch team of Julian Briercliffe and Tim Baker 3/11, 8/11, 11/6, 9/11. However, Corran and McLarney bounced back to beat Copy Shop’s Sean Drewry and Danny Hamill 11/6, 12/10, 9/11, 11/6. In their next match they overcame Marc Townsend and Ewan Watterson 12/10, 11/8, 8/11, 7/11, 11/8 and finally their fellow Breakaway team-mates Malcolm Cummings and Darren Smethurst 3/11, 12/10, 11/5, 11/7.

The runners-up Ronan McDonnell and Hadyn McLarney beat all the above teams with the exception of winners. Three teams finished with three wins. Briercliffe and Baker took third even though they lost to fourth placed Quirk and Magnall. Townend and Watterson had the worst sets won to lost ratio and so finished fifth. Drewry and Hamill won their wooden spoon match 11/9, 10/12, 11/7, 12/10 against Cummings and Smethurst who had earlier beaten Briercliffe and Baker.
