It’s tight at the top in the Fun-88 sponsored IOM Table Tennis League.
The movers and the shakers after week three show that in division 1, Copy Shop A share the top position with Travellers A on 21 points. In division 2, Copy Shop B lead the field with 25 points and Tower B just two points behind. P I Forward A maintain position at the top of division 3 with 27 points and Travellers D are just one point behind. Division 4 leaders Ramsey G now share the top spot with Copy Shop E on 14 points after playing their game in hand.
Division One
Copy Shop A (6) Ramsey A (3)
In this fixture there were some immense battles with four games settled in the fifth. For Copy Shop, the 2019 island champion Sean Drewry scored a hat-trick but had to work hard to beat Adam Teare in a battle that was settled in the fifth. Paul Corran won two games and was himself embroiled in two five set battles against Adam Teare and Becky Taylor, Adam Davies won one game. For Ramsey, Adam Teare won two games and Rhys Yardley continued to score in every match so far and won one game.
Travellers A (7) Strathallan (2)
A strong performance from the Travellers team, with all but two games settled in three, there were some very close matches played. Scott Lewis continues to dominate his opponents and remains unbeaten, Marc Townsend and Malcolm Cummings both won two games. Strathallan have struggled to get out of the starting blocks this season with Julian Briercliffe and Andy Patterson managing to win just one game each.
Arbory (7) Ramsey B (2)
Arbory’s strength was put into question in this fixture by some exceptional individual performances from Ramsey. Top 12, divisional and Grand Prix winner Sam Bailey won three games without losing a set in his first match of the season. Khayee Vinas and Mike Tamarov won two games each. The thorn is their side came from Tim Baker who beat Khayee and Mike without losing a set.
Division Two
Travellers B (6) Ramsey C (4)
A sterling performance from Travellers to win this fixture having forfeited three games before they stepped into the court. Even more impressive was that Tommy Cowin who stepped up for this fixture, won a hat trick! Mike Dunning won two and their pairing also won the doubles. The Ramsey team salvaged one point thanks to a fifth set win from Adrian Slater.
Peel B (3) Peel A (7)
This fixture promised to be close and the players didn’t disappoint with only one match won in straight sets. For B, each team member, Stuart Perry, Matty Evans and Maggie Mulhern, were able to pick off one game each for their three points. A's Malcolm Lewis and Stuart Mason both won hat tricks and also paired up for the doubles win to claim their seven points.
Tower B (10) Travellers C (0)
A weakened Travellers team with one step up player had no answer to the experienced Tower team of Graham McFarlane, Simon Radcliffe and Steve Curtis. The Doubles was won by the pairing of Graham and Simon. The closest Travellers got to stealing a point was from David Buck against Graham in a game which was settled in the fifth set.
Copy Shop B (9) Copy Shop C (1)
With just one game settled in the fifth and four games in the fourth, there were signs of resistance from C but the B team were just too strong. Ewan Watterson and Rob Sim both won hat tricks, Kevin Drewry won two and the doubles was won by Kevin and Rob. For C, it was last year’s under 16s Island Champion Libby Quaggin who after a fifth set decider won the game and claimed the C team’s solitary point.
Division Three
Ramsey D (10) Peel D (0)
A dominant performance from a Ramsey team who’s players competed at the Guernsey Senior Schools tournament. Peel fought hard with three games settled in the fifth, but could not convert their efforts into a win. The Ramsey team were brothers Glenn and Charlie Callow who also paired up for the doubles and William Dalugdugan who stepped up for this match.
Play It Forward A (8) Play It Forward B (2)
With the exception of one contended game that was settled in the fifth and two in the fourth, PIF A remained firmly in control. Brandon Montgomery won a hat trick, Adam Braidwood and George Tsioutsioulis won two games each and the doubles was won by Brandon and George in a fourth set tie break 14-12. For PIF B, Shaun Field dug in to win two games, one in a fifth set tie break 12-14.
Travellers D (8) Ramsey F (2)
A dominant performance from Travellers but Ramsey held their nerve and clinched two games, both in the fifth set. Travellers’ Jackie Gill and Rob Wright won hat tricks as well as the doubles, Maurice Campbell won one game. For Ramsey, Martyn Howard and Thomase Morris won one game each.
Copy Shop D (7) Ramsey E (3)
With three games settled in the fifth set, the score line could have been different. Copy Shop’s Sonia Shaw and John Paul won hat tricks and also paired up for the doubles win and their seven points. For Ramsey, Frank Feeney, William Dalugdugan and Matthew Bell won one game each for their three points.
Tower C (6) Peel C (4)
The experienced Tower team were asked questions from an enthusiastic young Peel team and held on for the win. Mike Chapman and Barry Jenkins won two games each and also the doubles which was settled in the fifth. Margaret Forsyth won one game. For Peel, young William Shooter scored his first hat trick of the season and Sam Preece won one game for their four points.
Division Four
Copy Shop E (10) Copy Shop F (0)
A commanding and ruthless performance from Copy Shop’s E team in a white wash of their F team. The team were Jake and Daniel Levine who also paired up for the doubles and Corbyn Schade.
IOM Junior Development (5) Junior Development North (5)
There were some close matched played in this fixture which were settled in a tie break but by looking at the match results, you will see that these development teams are evenly matched. IOM JD’s Ali Ramirez won a hat trick, Joe Devereau won one, they also paired up for the doubles win. JD North’s Meghan Lord and young Ryan Holland secured two wins each and Faye Coulter won one game.
