It’s all to play for in the Fun-88 sponsored IOM Table Tennis League.

 

 

After four weeks, there are no clear leaders with all divisions fighting much harder this year to gain top spot. In division 1, Copy Shop A extend their lead at the top with 27 points but Arbory (22) and Travellers A (21) both have a game in hand. 

In division 2, Tower B move into the lead with 33 points, 4 points clear of Peel A on 29 points. Thanks to their 10 point win, P I Forward A extend their lead at the top of division 3 to 37 points, Travellers D are now 5 points behind on 32. Ramsey G share first place with Copy Shop E in division 4 with 24 points each.

 

Division One

 

Ramsey A (3) Arbory (6) 

In a close scoring match with three of the games decided in the fifth set, Arbory secured a decisive victory having played two of the leagues best defenders. Captain of Ramsey A, Adam Teare fought hard for his two wins in four and five sets, Rhys Yardley added their third win in an epic five set battle against John Magnall. For Arbory there were no hat tricks, Khayee Vinas, John Magnall and Jason Quirk all won two games each. The show stopper had to be Adam v Jason, Adam was 9-3 ahead in the fifth set but couldn’t get the score over the line, Jason clawed back into the game with out conceding a point to win 9-11.

 

Strathallan (3) Copy Shop A (6) 

For this fixture, Strathallan were fortunate to pick up three points from a Copy Shop forfeit. For the match, all but one game played was won in straight sets by the current and former island champions Sean Drewry and Paul Corran.

Ramsey B (8) Tower A (1)

With some close scoring games, three were settled in the fourth set and one in the fifth, Tower were unfortunate to walk away with just one point. Ramsey Captain Tim Baker and Chris Holland both won hat tricks and Chris Holmes won two games. For Tower, Jakk Limungkoon dug deep to win one in a fourth set victory.

 

Division Two

Copy Shop C (0) Tower B (10) 

The former division one Tower team only lost one set in this whitewash of Copy Shop. The Tower team were Steve Curtis, Simon Radcliffe and Dario Mazzotta, Steve and Simon played the doubles.

Peel B (3) Travellers B (7)

Considering Travellers had two step up players for this fixture, this was a strong performance. Peel’s Matty Evans won two close games and Stuart Perry won one. For the Travellers team, Tommy Cowin won a hat trick, Mike Dunning won two and David Buck won one game, Mike and Tommy paired cup for the doubles win which was a fifth set decider.

Ramsey C (7) Desmonds Douglas A (3)

With two players from each team stepping up for this fixture, there was a lot at stake for the win. For Ramsey, Dave Bufton, Glenn and Charlie Callow all won two games each and the pairing of Dave with Charlie won the doubles in the fifth set. For Desmonds, the only regular from the team Russell Kent, was able to win all his games and achieve a hat trick.

Travellers C (0) Peel A (10)

With three games decided in the fifth set and seven tie breaks, Travellers fought hard to prevent a whitewash but Peel were just too strong. The Peel team were Malcolm Lewis, Stuart Mason and Ken Hegarty Malcolm and Ken won the doubles. 

Division Three

Ramsey E (4) Travellers D (6) 

This fixture was hard fought with five games decided in the fifth set, the result could have easily been different. Ramsey’s William Dalugduggan won two games and Matthew Bell won one game, the doubles was won by William and team mate Frank Feeney. Alan Harding won a hat trick, Rob Wright won two and Jackie Gill won one game for Traveller’s six points and the victory.

Ramsey F (4) Tower C (6)

A close scoring match with some strong individual performances reflected in the score line. For Ramsey, Thomase Morris won two games, both decided in the fourth set and Martyn Howard won one game, Thomase and Martyn also paired up for the doubles win. Tower’s Barry Jenkins fought hard for his har trick with two games decided in the fifth set, Margaret Forsyth won two games and Barry Jenkins won one game. 

 

Peel C (0) Play It Forward A (10) 

Peel were not able to field a full team and conceded three points before setting foot on the court. Nevertheless, with the exception of one set, the Play It Forward team dominated this match which resulted in a whitewash. The Play It Forward team were George Tsioutsioulis, Adam Braidwood and Brandon Montgomery. 

 

Play It Forward B (2) Ramsey F (8) 

With eight sets decided with a tie break, two games going to five sets and three games to four, this match was closer than the score would suggest. For PIF, Shaun Field won two games, one in a fifth set decider against Charlie Callow. The flair and recent youth games experience of Glenn and Charlie Callow delivered Glenn a Hat trick and Charlie two wins. They also paired up for the doubles win in a fifth set decider. Sally Green added their other two points, both games decided in the fourth set.

 

Peel D (2) Desmonds Douglas B (8)

Peel played a step up player for this fixture which featured some strong individual performances from both teams. Ronan Thompson won two games both decided in the fourth set for Peel's two points. Desmonds were kept honest by Peel with two of their wins decided in the fifth set and two in the fourth. Desmond’s Neil Ronan won a hat trick, Peter Russell and Richard Hill won two games each, Peter and Neil paired up for the doubles win.

 

Division Four

 

Copy Shop E (10) IOM Junior Development (0) 

IOM JD were weakened, forfeiting one player and three points to Copy Shop, nevertheless this whitewash was an emphatic win and the team of Jake and Daniel Levine with Corbyn Schade didn’t lose a set. Daniel and Corbyn played the doubles.

Ramsey G (10) Junior Development North (0)

The Ramsey team achieved a clean sweep without dropping a set resulting in a white wash of IOM JD. The team was Wilma Dalugduggan, Francesca Lord and Lisa Lord. Francesca and Wilma paired up for the doubles win.

 

Copy Shop F (3) Peel E (7)

A close scoring match with two games decided in the fifth set and five games in the fourth set, the result was a fair one. Ben Arthur, Amit Lanin and Hugo Perrie won one game each for Copy Shop’s three points. For Peel, James Devereau won a hat trick, Miltos Proxatakis won two games and Suvi Shaw won one game, Miltos and Suvi paired up for the doubles win.

Less than one month to go for the Home Countries International at the National Sports Centre, Douglas, hosted by the IOM Table Tennis Association. Top players from across the Islands and the United Kingdom will be competing for trophies in the Senior, Junior and Cadet classification from the 8th to 10th November.
