'Ryan Holland wins IOM Table Tennis Under 14s and Under 16s. Doubles title won by Quirk and Holland'.
The final events were played last week. Wednesday saw the Under 14s being played in a closely fought group of 4 players. Three of the players went on to win 2 of their games with Megan Lord being unlucky to attain a win. Amit Lanin beat Ryan Holland 11/7 in the 5th end, Ryan then went on to beat Dan Levine in straight sets with Dan beating Amit 11/9 in the 5th. After a count back Ryan Holland took the title with Amit Lanin as runner up.
In the Under 16s category, 9 players lined up in 3 groups to play for the title. William Dalugdugan won Group A with Ryan Holland as runner up. In Group B William Shooter took first place with Ege Niyazi in second. Group C saw Charlie Callow winning with Wilma Dalugdugan in second place. Winners of Groups A & B had byes through to the semi finals, leaving the remaining four players to fight for their semi final spot. Ege Niyazi upset the seedings when he beat Charlie Callow 11/3, 11/13, 14/12, 11/9. In a tightly fought match Ryan Holland then battled his way to victory against the impressive Wilma Dalugdugan 10/12, 12/10, 11/13, 12/10, 11/8. The first semi final was another long affair, with Ryan Holland doing well to beat William Shooter 10/12, 12/10, 11/13, 12/10, 11/8. William Dalugdugan had a slightly smoother route to the final, beating Ege Niyazi 11/13, 11/8, 11/5, 11/5. The final between William and Ryan was won in 4 ends by Ryan 11/6, 8/11, 11/2, 11/9. A very impressive win for young Ryan to add to his under 14s title.
The Mixed Doubles had only 4 pairs contesting the title. Current holders Scott Lewis and Khayee Vinas successfully defended their title when they won all their matches. Sean Drewy and Sonja Shaw narrowly beat Jason Quirk and Maggie Mulhern to take the runners up spot 11/6, 9/11, 11/7, 7/11, 11/7. Siblings Wilma and William Dalugdugan were unlucky to lose all their games against more experienced players.
The Men’s Doubles saw only 9 pairs contesting the event this year after some illness and a withdrawal. Group A was won by current holders Marc Townsend and Malcolm Cummings with father and son pairing John and William Shooter finishing in second place. Group B going with the seeding saw Jason Quirk and Chris Holland take top spot with Julian Briercliffe and Neil Quane as runners up. Group C was won by Sean Drewry and Sasha Thomas with Andy Patterson and Wayne Taylor in second place. Byes were given to the winners of Group A & B. The first preliminary match between Andy Patterson and Wayne Taylor and the Shooters was a straight sets win for father and son John & William. The second preliminary match was between Sean and Sasha, and Julian and Neil, with Sean & Sasha taking their place in the semi final.
The first semi final saw Jason and Chris beating the Shooters in another tight game 11/7, 7/11, 11/8, 7/11, 11/6. The second semi final was a win for Marc and Malcolm 11/6, 12/14, 11/7, 5/11, 11/7, with the final being a straight sets win for the victorious Jason Quirk and Chris Holland.
