Weekly Press Report - Week 15

'Crellin in supreme form for Copy Shop A in Division 1 Table Tennis'

Week 15 of the Fun88 sponsored Isle of Man Table Tennis League took place last week at the NSC, with more impressive individual and team performances prior to half term.

 Division 1

 Travellers B (3) Arbory (6)

John Shooter was in magnificent form yet again and contributed 3 points for the home side. He beat Arbory's Mike Tamarov in 3 convincing games, Khayee Vinas in 4, and finally overturned Jason Quirk 11-7 in the 5th end, in a topsy turvy match. Malc Lewis took a game off Quirk, but was unable to make any further impression. Will Shooter took a game off Vinas buty was also unable to add to the Travellers points tally.

Ramsey A (6) Copy Shop A (3)

Brian Crellin was in superb form for Copy Shop in his best week yet. He firstly disposed of the normally tough to beat Duncan Alexander 11-7, 11-9, 8-11, 11-5. He then beat Chris Holland in 5 exciting games with the fifth end settled at 11-7 - another impressive win. Finally he steered past Chris Holmes in 3 games. Unfortunately Sean Drewry was not able to play so his 3 points were forfeited. Sasha Thomas was Copy Shop's other player and whilst he played well he was unable to take any additional points for Copy Shop.

Travellers A (8) Strathallan (1)

Neil Quane pulled off an impressive win over Malcolm Cummings in this match, but this was the only point the visitors managed to take. Travellers are league leaders, and they extended their lead at the top with this win. Scott Lewis beat Neil Quane in 3 games, as he did Andy Patterson, albeit the third game in that match notably went to 16-14. Wayne Taylor also put up a dogged fight against Lewis, only losing in the 3rd end 15-13. Liam Chan was ruthless for Travellers in his disposal of all 3 opponents in his games. Cummings had a good win against Patterson, taking the final 2 games 14-12, 11-6.

Desmonds Douglas A (0) Ramsey B (9)

Russell Kent had a real tussle with the in-form Ramsey player Glenn Callow, eventually losing 8-11 in the fifth end, after being 2 games up. Kent had no joy against the experienced Tim Baker, and Wael Kassim, with both matches settled in 3 ends. Match of the night perhaps was between Tommy Cowin and Wael Kassim, with the young Ramsey player Kassim coming back from being 2-1 down, to take the 4th and 5th games 11-4, 11-7.  Unfortunately Desmonds only had 2 players so forfeited the final 3 points to a grateful Ramsey B.

Tower A (9) Ramsey C (0)

Tower A needed a good result here, and got it. Ramsey fielded 2 step up players from Division 3 in the form of Francesca Lord and Wilma Dalugdugan. Having said that, they are part of a group of young players who are now flourishing under the expert guidance of coaching team John Shooter, Sean Drewry and Malc Lewis, and are improving each week. Francesca and Wilma acquitted themselves well and earned more great experience in this tie, but were unable to get past the experienced Tower trio of Mike and Will Bayley, and Jakk Limungkoon. Match of the night perhaps was Mike Bayley's tussle with Adrian Slater who took the match to a 5th set decider, with the Tower man looping and chopping his way to victory.

Division 2

Tower C (1) Peel B (9)

Tower were only able to field 2 players in this tie and for them the only ray of sunshine was Barry Jenkins' victory over Maggie Mulhern in a 5 set battle, being settled 11-8 in the final end. For Peel, Stuart Perry was pushed hard by Mike Chapman, taking him to a 5th set decider, but Perry settled it convincingly 11-3. The doubles was won by Perry and Nathan Evans for Peel, in a closely fought match against Chapman and Jenkins 9-11, 11-7, 11-13, 11-5, 11-5.

Tower B (10) Travellers C (0)

Table toppers Tower B maintained their momentum here, taking all 10 points in convincing style, albeit Travellers forfeited 3 of those due to having only 2 players. Graham McFarlane was taken to a 4th end by Adrian Tinkler but managed to see off the Travellers player 11-9. Dario Mazzotta was challenged all the way by attacking player David Buck, but managed to squeeze through 11-9 in the 5th end, using his long pips to good effect. Steve Curtis of Tower was also pushed hard by Buck but managed to see him off 11-4 in the 4th end.

Peel A (7) Copy Shop B (3)

Stuart Mason of Peel A, beat Darren Shaw in 3 games after squeezing through 12-10 in the first. He then saw off Darren's daughter Sonja, also in 3 games. Mason then came up against his old foe Malcolm Lambert who pulled off a tremendous victory over Stu in 5 ends 10-12, 11-4, 11-13, 11-9, 11-9. Elsewhere, for Peel, Ken Hegarty pulled off 2 good wins over Darren and Sonja, but was taken apart by a dominant Lambert in 3 ends. Ronan Thompson was Peel's third player and he managed to also beat Darren and Sonja, but also came unstuck against Lambert in 3 ends. The doubles was taken by Lambert and Sonja in 4 ends.

Desmonds Douglas B (3) Copy Shop C (7)

For the home side, Neil Ronan pulled off excellent wins over Rob Wright in 3 ends, and notably against Mike Levine in 5 ends. Copy Shop player Wright managed to defeat Peter Russell and Richard Hill, both in 4 games. Kevin Drewry had a tremendous evening, defeating Russell and Hill in 3 ends, and then Ronan in 5 close games. Doubles was decided in favour of Ronan and Russell 11-6, 11-7, 6-11, 13-11.

Travellers D (2) Ramsey D (8)

Travellers D fielded Ege Niyazi as a Junior Development Player in this tie, and he acquitted himself extremely well, winning his matches against Charlie Callow in 5 ends, and Nathan Walker in 3. He lost out to Geoff Ball however in 4 games, 11-13 in the final end. Elsewhere for Travellers neither Maurice Campbell, nor Jackie Gill were able to add any points, going down to Ball, Callow and Walker. Charlie took 5 games however to get past a battling Jackie.

Division 3

Ramsey E (1) Copy Shop E (9)

Ege Niyazi had a great win for Copy Shop against Francesca Lord in 3 games, then against Lisa Lord in 4 ends. He was pushed hard by Wilma Dalugdugan only managing to take victory 12-10 in the final end. Dan Levine also played well to take points off Lisa in 3 games, and Wilma in 4, with the final end in that match going to 13-11. He was then stopped in his tracks by a tremendous performance by Francesca, who managed to see off Dan in 3 ends. Mike Levine was untroubled in his 3 matches albeit Wilma did well to take a game off him in their match which Mike won in 4. Doubles went to Mike and Dan in 3 ends.

Copy Shop D (1) Ramsey F (9)

A dominant performance by the Ramsey boys Matthew Bell, Ryan Holland and Tom Tsitsos, with all matches being settled in 3 ends apart from Matthew's 4 set win over Darren Shaw. Darren then built on this performance to then beat Tom 11-7, 7-11, 11-6, 6-11, 11-8. Doubles went to Bell and Holland in 3 games against Darren Shaw and Pat Halliwell.

Peel C (10) Peel D (0)

Amit Lanin was in good form in this tie for Peel C, seeing off Liam Bibby in 4 games, and then James Devereau in 3. Peel D forfeited 3 points unfortunately as they had only 2 players. Vlad Lanin then added a further 2 points with 3 set victories, as did Bob Borland, albeit his were both achieved in 4 ends.
