Weekly Press Report - 2023 Top 12

Headline: 'Quirk springs a surprise in Top 12 Table Tennis' 

 

The Senior Top 12 Barry Callister Memorial Trophy was played at the NSC last Sunday. The event is contested by the top 12 ranked senior players, who started in 2 groups of 6 players. Sadly missing from the line up were current holder Sean Drewry, and Island Games player Duncan Alexander, leaving Chris Holland and Scott Lewis as top seeds. Over half of the 30 matches played were decided in the 4th or 5th ends, indicating how close the

matches were. 

 

The group stages finished with the players in the following order -
Group A: Chris Holland, Jason Quirk, Liam Chan, Malcolm Cummings, Andy Patterson, Wayne Taylor. 

Group B, Adam Teare, Scott Lewis, John Shooter, Khayee Vinas, Becky Taylor, Mike Tamarov.
Players were then split into 3 groups of 4 players, with the top 2 players in each group playing for positions 1-4. Players placed 3rd & 4th in their groups were playing for places 5-8, leaving the bottom 2 players in each group playing for places 9-12. 
Group A saw Adam Teare top the group after beating Scott Lewis in straight sets setting up a semi final match with Jason Quirk. Jason moved into the final by beating Adam 8/11, 11/5, 11/4, 12/10. The second semi final between Chris Holland and Scott Lewis saw Scott through to the final winning 5/11, 11/8, 11/6, 11/5. Adam Teare took 3rd place after beating Chris Holland 11/8 in the 5th end.


The final between Jason and Scott saw Jason emerge triumphant after yet another thrilling 5 setter. The scores were 10/12, 11/4, 11/4, 9/11, 11/8. 

 

5th place was claimed by Khayee Vinas after beating John Shooter 11/13, 11/7, 11/8, 10/12, 11/2. 7 th place went to Malcolm Cummings after beating team mate Liam Chan 11/9, 4/11, 2/11, 11/6, 11/9. Becky Taylor went on to take 9th place beating Mike Tamarov 11/13, 5/11, 11/9, 12/10, 11/6, Wayne Taylor took 11th place when he beat fellow Strathallan player Andy Patterson 11/8, 11/8, 9/11, 7/11, 11/4.

So, after 6 hours of exciting table Tennis the final standings were as below (numbers in brackets alongside the players names show their starting ranking).
