Weekly Press Report - Week 11

Ramsey A Overpower Tower  A in Division 1

Action resumed last week at the NSC as the second half of the table tennis season got underway. Some will have regretted those extra mince pies over Christmas, but nevertheless it was good to see renewed energy and enthusiasm amongst those who attended the Wednesday and Friday sessions.

Division 1

Travellers A (8) Tower B (1)

Scott Lewis, Malcolm Cummings and Liam Chan kept the pressure on Ramsey A with this result. Unfortunately Tower had to forfeit 3 points as they were without a third player. Travellers chalked up 3 wins against Steve Curtis, but they were pushed hard by a determined Paul Callow. He pushed Chan to a 5th set before the Travellers player powered his way to victory 11-4 in the final end. Callow then had a tremendous win against Malcolm Cummings, using his combination rubbers to great effect. The match was decided 11-9 in the 5th end in Callow's favour, earning Tower a vital point..

Ramsey A (9) Tower A (0)

Chris Holland led from the front and demonstrated yet again why Ramsey A are  top of the table. He and Duncan Alexander swept aside the hapless Tower trio of Ken Mitchell, Mike Bayley and Dave Parsons, albeit Parsons did manage to salvage a game from Holland before going down in the 4th end. Adam Teare was equally ruthless in his demolition of the opposition - all in straight games. This win extends Ramsey's lead at the top to 14 points over Travellers A.

Arbory (8) Ramsey B (1)

Arbory remains in 3rd spot, just ahead of Travellers B with this valuable 8 point haul. Jason Quirk was as efficient as ever in winning his matches in straight ends - first against Will Dalugdugan, then Chris Holmes, then Becky Taylor. It was a similar story for the Khayee Vinas who was returning to action. She beat Will and Chris in 3 games apiece, but Becky did well to push her hard before the Tower player edged through 11-9 in the 4th. Mike Tamarov had a comfortable win over Will, before easing through 12-10 in the 4th end against Holmes. Becky Taylor had other ideas however, and out-looped Tamarov to salvage a point for Ramsey. In a somewhat topsy turvy match, Becky hung on to take the match 11-6 in the 5th end.

Strathallan (5) Copy Shop A (4)

Andy Patterson had 2 good wins for Strathallan against youngsters Sasha Thomas and Ryan Holland - in 3 against Sasha and in 4 against Ryan. He then faced a stiff test against Sean Drewry and succumbed 8-11, 4-11, 8-11. Wayne Taylor then stepped forward and notched a point with a win for the home side against Thomas, but then lost out to Ryan, with the youngster, to his credit, coming back from 2-0 down to seize victory. Taylor versus Drewry was settled in 3 games. Andy Horne made a rare appearance for Strathallan. His experience and long pips game befuddled Sasha and Ryan, though to their credit they each managed to push Andy to a 4th end before losing out. Drewry then added his third point of the night against Horne, thereby limiting the scoreline for Copy Shop.

Travellers B (7) Peel A (2)

Travellers B now comfortably occupy 4th spot in the table after this good result. John Shooter swept aside the Peel trio of Ken Hegarty, Stu Perry and Ronan Thompson in straight games - they had no answer to his classy counter-hitting style. Malc Lewis was pushed hard by Perry in a close match before Lewis bucked up his ideas, just managing to pip Stu 14-12 in the 4th end. Malc was then pushed equally hard by Ronan, with this one going to the final end. Lewis steadied himself and managed to take the final 2 games 11-6, 11-5. In his final match of the night Malc was also taken to a 5th end, but this time Ken Hegarty came out on top with a superb victory 13-11, 7-11, 11-7, 8-11, 12-10. Will Shooter contributed well once again for Travellers with 2 good wins - in 3 ends against Hegarty, then in 5 against Perry, hauling himself back from being 2-0 down to take the final 3 games - a notable comeback indeed!

Division 2

Ramsey C (6) Copy Shop B (4)

Malcolm Lambert had clearly stayed off the mince pies, and was nimble in taking 3 good points for Copy Shop. Firstly in 4 ends against Adrian Slater, in 5 against Nathan Walker, and again in 5 against rising star Glenn Callow. The latter match was particularly close, with Malcolm edging it 11-9 in the final end. Rob Wright swept aside Slater in a ruthless 3 game demolition, but was brought back down to Earth by Callow, going down in 3 ends. Walker then did well to beat Wright in the 4th end. Finally for Copy Shop, Dan Levine must have been gutted, losing out in all his 3 matches in the 5th end. Credit to the Ramsey trio for those wins, and surely better luck for Dan next week.

Desmonds Douglas A (3) Travellers C (7)

Brandon Montgomery of Desmonds disposed of David Buck in 4 ends, but lost out to David Lovelady and Keeran Chan by the same margin. Russell Kent had a superb win over Chan in 3 ends, but could not continue the magic, losing out to Lovelady and Buck. George Tsioutsioulis managed a point by beating Buck in 3 but succumbed to the brilliant play of Lovelady and Chan over 3 ends. Lovelady and Chan then continued their excellent partnership by taking the doubles in 3 straight games against Messrs Kent & Montgomery.

Ramsey D (6) Peel B (4)

Francesca Lord, Wilma Dalugdugan and Keith Herrington were tough opposition on paper for this Peel B side, but Maggie Mulhearn played extremely well to sweep aside Francesca and Wilma in 4 ends, and Keith in 3. Ale Ramirez did well to nudge past a dogged Herrington, just pipping him 11-8 in the 5th end. Bob Borland was Peel's 3rd player, and whilst he battled hard he was unable to make an impression against the Peel trio. His matches against Francesca and Keith were particularly notable as they each went to 5 ends. In a closely fought doubles contest, Francesca and Wilma squeezed past Maggie and Ale in 3 ends 15-13, 11-7, 11-9.

Desmond's Douglas B (2) Copy Shop C (8)

Neil Ronan salvaged 2 points for Desmonds with superb wins against David Stevenson in 4 ends, and Dan Levine in 5 ends. Kevin's Drewry's hard bat style didn't suit Neil however and he went down in 4 ends to the Copy Shop player. Most notable in this tie however was the unfortunate George Tsiousioulis, losing all 3 of his matches in the 5th end. First against Stevenson with some very exciting play and close games, with the Copy Shop player taking the match 11-4 in the 5th. Then he lost out to Drewry 11-13 in the 5th, then to Levine 10-12 in the final end. Levine did well to take a point against a stubborn Richard Hill, edging through 11-9 in the final game. The doubles was taken by Stevenson and Drewry in yet another 5 setter against George and Ronan. I suspect that George must have had trouble sleeping after this fixture!

Division 3

Ramsey E (10) Junior Development North (0)

Darren Shaw, Lisa Lord and Roland Bouchat were up against the improving youngsters of the Junior North team. Caleb Crowe, Thomas Taylor-Burt and William Humphreys however were unable to cope with the experience and solid play of the Ramsey team. All matches, including the doubles, were limited to 3 games. Lisa and Darren took the doubles against Caleb and William with a resounding 11-4, 11-2, 11-3 scoreline. Ramsey E now sit in third place in the third tier, well ahead of their F team.

Tower C (8) IOM Junior Development (2)

Tower C is now in second place in the table, just 7 points behind Travellers D. This was a solid performance from the experienced Tower trio of Margaret Forsyth, Mike Chapman and Barry Jenkins. They were untroubled on the night against Megan Corris and Max Doyle. Luke Begley was  surely the star performer of the evening however. He managed to beat Mike Chapman 11-7, 11-9, 12-10, then went on to take the honours against Margaret 12-10, 7-11, 11-8, 4-11, 11-5. The way Luke came back from 11-4 in the 4th end, taking the 5th 11-5, says a lot for his determination - a superb 2 points then for him, and his team! Mike and Margaret then galvanised themselves to take the doubles from Luke and Megan 11-4, 12-10, 11-3.

Travellers D (10 Ramsey F (0)

Unfortunately Ramsey F could field only 2 players on the night, Henry da Silva, and Geoff Burchill. They were therefore instantly 3-0 down. Maurice Campbell, Jackie Gill and Adrian Tinkler showed why they are top of Division 3 with a ruthless performance, taking each match in 3 games with one exception. Burchill had a 5 set thriller with Jackie Gill, with the honours eventually going to Gill, who managed to close out the final end 11-6 and take the match. Doubles went to Maurice and Jackie 11-4, 11-5, 11-3.
