Week 2 of the Fun88 sponsored IOM Table Tennis Association league saw another round of singles matches in Divisions 1 & 2. In Division 3, there was another round of singles but also one doubles match per fixture. Highlights of each fixture is summarised below, with full match details and statistics to be found at  www.tabletennis365.com/IOM

Division 1
Arbory B (1) Travellers A (8)
Amit Lanin was the only home player to contribute a point in this tough fixture against last season’s table toppers Travellers A. He powered his way to victory against Malcolm Cummings 11-8, 11-5, 11-13, 11-9 in what was a very impressive performance by the youngster. He took games off Island number one Scott Lewis, and Liam Chan, before falling in the 4th end in both matches. Dan Levine played extremely well in his match against Cummings, just falling short 11-13 in the 5th end, to the applause of the remaining players.

Tower A (2) Ramsey A (7)
Tower’s Dave Parsons had an excellent win against the returning Chris Holmes, pulling through in straight sets 11-8, 11-8, 11-7. He could not replicate that form against Becky Taylor however, losing in the 3rd end. He did push Duncan Alexander to a 5th end though, before falling 6-11 to the Ramsey left hander. Ken Mitchell was victorious against Becky, taking the win 11-4 in the final end. He failed to build on that form against Holmes however,  with the Ramsey player looping his way to victory 12-10 in the 4th end. MIke Bayley pushed Holmes hard too, losing narrowly in the 4th end 11-13.

Strathallan (3) Arbory A (6)
Strathallan, sponsored by BB Consulting Engineers, earned a valuable 3 points in this tie with Wayne Taylor again playing well alongside teammates Julian Briercliffe and Neil Quane. Each managed to defeat Sonja Shaw, albeit the Arbory player was able to take a game off Julian. Quane took Mike Tamarov to a 5th end in a very entertaining attacking display by both players. Mike used all his experience to eventually dash Neil’s hopes 11-6 in the final end. Wayne also managed to nab a game off Tamarov before falling in the 4th end. With Jason Quirk and Mike being unbeaten on the night, Arbory will gladly take the 6 points.

Tower B (1) Travellers B (8)
Simon Radcliffe was the only ray of sunshine for Tower B, contributing a point by pulling off a magnificent win over Traveller’s Malc Lewis. Simon blasted his way to victory without pausing for breath, 11-8, 11-9, 11-7. Elsewhere, Dario Mazotta had a good tilt at Lewis, but was foiled in the 5th end with Lewis closing Dario down 11-4, in what was a rather topsy turvy scoreline. Radcliffe took young Will Shooter to a 4th end before Will pulled through 13-11, 11-4 in the final 2 ends. Will also had a close one with Dario, who battled well all night. Will outlasted him however, taking it 11-7 in the final end.

Division 2
JRTE Marketing A (3) Ramsey B (6)
Darren Smethurst once again contributed 3 points for JRTE. He was pushed hardest by Tim Baker, just pipping him 12-10 in the 5th end. Wael Kassim made a welcome return to table tennis after a couple of years out, and played well against Darren but fell to him in the 4th end. Darren then ruthlessly saw off Adrian Slater in 3 ends. Paul Mitchinson took a game off Baker as did his JRTE team mate Steven Carridge against Wael, but they were unable to provide any further points for the home side.

Ramsey C (0) Travellers C (9)
Darren Shaw, Martyn Howard and Ben Fairfax playing for the home side Ramsey C were pitted against a particularly strong Travellers C team. Having been relegated from Division 1 last season, Keeran Chan, David Buck and Alex Buck seem intent on challenging for promotion again - albeit it’s early days. The only crumb of comfort for Ramsey was when Darren took the first end off Dave Buck, but was then pegged back to lose the match 3-1.

Arbory C (3) Peel A (6)
Arbory’s Dave Bufton, Kevin Drewry and Rob Wright look to be a strong team in Division 2, but they were pitted against another strong outfit also intent on promotion this season. Peel C’s Jon Taylor Burt had a close match against Drewry, edging ahead 17-15 in the 3rd end and then finishing the job 11-7 in the 4th. Jon added a further 2 points by seeing off both Wright and Bufton in 4 games. Stu Perry had an excellent win against Drewry, just edging it 11-9 in the final end. Dave also had a close one against Peel’s Ken Hegarty, pipping him at the post by defeating Ken 11-5 in the final game. Overall, Peel will be satisfied to accrue 6 points from this tie.

Arbory D (2) Desmonds Douglas A (7)
Desmond’s racked up another great result with Russ Kent getting back to top form by claiming 3 points. He overwhelmed young Liav Lanin, doing the same to Bob Borland. He finished the job against the normally tough to beat Malcolm Lambert, taking the match 11-9, 12-10, 11-9 in what looked like an extremely close match. Lambert then retrieved the situation by beating Neil Ronan 11-8, 12-10, 9-11, 11-6 in a close and exciting match. He then managed to add his team’s second point by polishing off George Tsioutsioulis in 4 ends.

Division 3
Ramsey E (1) Travellers D (4)
Saul Tumblety and Teddy Clayton playing for the homeside had a tough assignment against the experienced Travellers duo of Maurice Campbell and Margaret Forsyth. So it proved with Maurice picking up 2 wins in straight games, and Margaret sweeping past Saul in 3 ends. She had a tougher match against Teddy however, with the Ramsey player pulling off a tremendous win in 5 ends, after being 2-0 down. The doubles was claimed by Maurice and Margaret 12-10, 11-3, 11-7.

Ramsey D (0) Travellers E (5)
The Travellers youngsters Henry Weaver and Eben Moore proved themselves to be a winning partnership with some superb play. Henry saw off Pat Helliwell in 4 ends, and made short work of Tony Sewell, also in 3 ends. Eben backed up Henry extremely well by also taking 2 singles points, and the boys combined well to take the doubles in the 4th end.

JRTE Marketing B (1) Travellers F (4)
JRTE’s Aaron Bradley and Gary Skillicorn found the going tough against the Travellers youngsters Sydnie Weaver and Rhys Bufton. Having said that, Aaron's matches both went to 5 ends. He lost out to Sydnie who battled her way back from 2 games down, to take the next 3 and the match. Aaron was able to hold off Rhys however, taking the final end 11-8, to his great relief. Sydnie and Rhys combined really well in the doubles to sweep past JRTE duo in the 4th end with a scoreline of 7-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-5.
