Girls lead England charge in Ostrava

Five out of seven English girls are still going in the singles events at the European Youth Championships in the Czech Republic, but only Naphong Boonyaprapa is left of the boys.

The Junior Girls had a 3/4 hit-rate as Charlotte Bardsley, Megan Gidney and Mollie Patterson all went into the Round of 64.

Patterson had the closest match as she defeated Ines Batista of Portugal 14-12 in a deciding seventh set. Her reward is a crack at top seed Tania Plaian of Romania on Sunday.

Bardsley also needed a decider as she came from 3-2 down, though she only conceded a total of five points across the sixth and seventh games against Anna Klempererova of the host nation. Bardsley also faces one of the leading players in the next round – fourth seed Kristina Kazantseva of Russia.

Gidney’s victory was a more routine 4-0 over Dimana Nikolova of Bulgaria. She next plays Marta Vukelic, the 28th seed from Croatia.

Only Denise Payet, the highest-ranked of the English players, went out, losing in six to Poland’s Zuzanna Blazejewicz.

In the Cadet Girls, Millie Rogove came from 3-1 down to defeat Serbia’s Tamara Turkonje in a decider. She now plays sixth seed Dorottya Tolgyes of Hungary in the last 64.

Ruby Chan, seeded at No 22, is also through, overcoming Melisa Sadikovic of Luxembourg. She next plays Dalma Hasanova of Bulgaria.

Mari Baldwin went out in the round of 128, beaten in six by the higher-ranked Kira Balogh of Hungary.

In the boys’ events, Boonyaprapa was the sole English player to progress to Sunday’s matches as he defeated Vladimir Pandurevic of Bosnia-Herzegovina in four straight in the Cadets. He will face ninth seed Andrei Tomica of Romania tomorrow.

Thomas Rayner and Louis Price lost out in the round of 128. The former went down to higher-ranked Noah Hvid of Denmark, while Price was beaten in a seventh by Tom Closset of Belgium, ranked just a few places below him.

In the Juniors, Ethan Walsh made it through the first round in a decider against Tommaso Giovannetti of Italy, but was then beaten in four straight, albeit mainly close, games by the higher-ranked Jonatan McDonald of Sweden in the round of 128.

Shayan Siraj was beaten in a deciding seventh game in the first round by Slovakia’s Dalibor Diko.

In the doubles, Payet reached the last 32 of the Junior Mixed in tandem with Borgar Haug of Norway, but their run was ended by the 10th seeds Maciej Kubik & Anna Wegrzyn of Poland.

Earlier, fourth seeds Vladislav Ursu (MDA) & Zdena Blaskova (CZE) defeated Gidney and her Portuguese partner Samuel da Silva in the second round, while Siraj & Patterson went out in the first.

In the Junior Boys, Walsh & Andre Pierre Kases of Austria ran into seventh seeds Csaba Andras & Oliver Both of Hungary in the last 64 and were beaten. Siraj, alongside Ognjen Stosic of Serbia, went out at the same stage.

Bardsley & Patterson are into the last 32 of the Junior Girls and will play the fifth seeds from Russia, Elizabet Abraamian & Anastasia Kolish on Sunday.

In the Cadet Boys, 16th seeds Rayner & Alve Sjoevold of Sweden went out in the first round to an Israeli pair, but Boonyaprapa & Price are through to the last 32, where they meet second seeds Darius Movileanu & Andrei Tomica of Romania.

The two Cadet Girls partnerships involving English players are out – Baldwin & Rogove losing to 13th seeds Sophie Earley or Ireland and Clea de Stoppelaire of France, while Ruby Chan & Hannah Hovden of Norway lost to a pair from Bosnia-Herzegovina and Croatia.

In the Cadet Mixed, Rayner & Baldwin got through the fist round but were then eliminated in the last 64 by German 29th seeds Vincent Senkbeil & Mia Griesel.

Price & Chan – seeded 30 – and Boonyaprapa & Rogove, went out in the first round.
