Match report - October 2nd 2017

Natland A lead the way

 

Competitive play in the Kendal & District Table Tennis League resumed last week after the summer break. Title contenders Natland A are the early leaders following an 8-2 win over Crook A. Roger Pimblett was player of the match with 3 wins in the singles. Phil Swift and Matt O’Flynn staved off a whitewash with victories over Louise Thompson and John Fearon respectively. Unbeaten Gareth Brunton starred as Dalton B defeated Natland B 7-3. Natland’s Tamas Bacsi impressively vanquished both Tony Whitehouse and Keith Mallinson, the latter in the match of the night, Tamas winning 11-8 11-9 9-11 8-11 13-11 in a nail biting finale.

 

In Division 2, performance of the week went to Burton B who crushed Natland C 9-1. A trio of wins for both Dennis Hooley and James Burton and a brace from Martin Wakelin propelled Burton B to the top of the Division. Only Bernard Pickthall’s victory over Wakelin in the final singles match averted a whitewash. Good performances also from Burton C and Natland D both with 8-2 wins over Kirkby Stephen A and Dallam B respectively. Dennis Hooley, recently arrived from Sheffield, completed an impressive first week with another 3 wins. Archie Catnach took the plaudits for Natland D with 3 singles wins including a phenomenal and unexpected 11-7 8-11 11-7 7-11 11-8 victory over Paul Gosling.

 

The Crook C trio of Hugh Simmons, Andy Gilchrist and John Hardwick lead Division 3 following a 29-9 victory over Natland E. James Robinson secured Natland E’s only win with an 11-6 in the 5th defeat of John Hardwick. In the only other Division 3 match, Kirkby Stephen B defeated Grayrigg A 24-11.
