Burton win the Divisional Shield

The annual Kendal & District Table Tennis League Divisional Shield Tournament took place in the Dallam School Sports Centre on Sunday, January 13th. Twelve teams competed in two divisions. In Division 1, 5 teams played a round robin event and Burton B, represented by Shelley Rhodes and Bob Quick, came out on top, winning all 4 of their matches. Natland B’s three man team of Mark Ashburn, James Burton and Andrew Hudson, were runners up, with 3 wins out of 4. In Division 2, two round robin groups were played, with 4 teams in Group A and 3 in Group B. The winners of Group A, Natland E2, represented by Samuel Medhurst and David Vyner Brooks played the winners of Group B, Natland C, featuring Peter Leahy and James Robinson, in the final. Medhurst and Vyner Brooks proved too strong and ran out winners by 172 points to 154. A competitive but friendly event, played in an excellent spirit, was enjoyed by all who played or watched.

Meanwhile, competitive play in the League continued with 2 of the 3 primary title challengers, IBIS and Natland A engaged in a crucial encounter at the top of Division 1. IBIS came out on top with a 24-16 victory. In a topsy turvy battle, Natland won the first 3 matches only to lose the next 7. Steve Dixon, James McGrath and Harry Carter each won 2 singles matches for IBIS with Dixon and McGrath combining to win the doubles. The third title contender, Burton A, consolidated their position at the top with a 29-6 defeat of Dallam A. Burton A almost completed a whitewash only for James Neal to recover from a 2-0 deficit against Dennis Hooley.
